Does exactly what I wanted - makes the Dot portable.
This battery base is exactly what I needed to let me use my Dot in the shed and garage, where I have limited power sockets, but I do have a WiFi signal.I've noticed a lot of negative reviews of this base, written by people who don't know what the base is for. It's not intended so you can use the Dot as a Bluetooth speaker in the park or when camping, for example - buy a Bluetooth speaker for that. Nor will it let you place your Dot permanently in a bathroom with no power socket. Unlike a simple Bluetooth speaker, the Dot is constantly powered, listening for a voice command. Dot is designed to be plugged-in all the time, and it doesn't know it's running off a battery, so yes, this battery base will run down overnight. Don't rely on it to wake you up for that important meeting, because that's not what it's intended for. Buy an alarm clock. So if the battery doesn't last long, what use is the battery base?Easy. It makes the Dot portable. It's for pottering around the house, garden and shed. For me, it's really great. I have three Dots. One lives permanently in the living room. Another is in the kitchen, and the third Dot used to live permanently in my workshop (shed). I've found I actually split my time between the garage, workshop and my office, so it made sense to take the Dot with me wherever I go. I've got a WiFi extender so the whole garden including the shed / workshop is covered. With the battery base I can have tunes in the shed, greenhouse, at the garden table, in the garage, washing the car in the driveway etc. I can even walk about with the Dot. The power supply lives in my home office / computer room, so I can still use it to control the Smart lighting in the house while it's charging up in the evening. This system worked so well that I immediately bought another base for the Dot in the kitchen. Mrs. Z didn't like the power cable trailing around the counter top, so I put a socket inside one of the cupboards. The Dot sits in the charging base, hidden away, but connected to the power supply, ready for use. If we want to listen to music in the kitchen, we just take the Dot out of the cupboard and put wherever it's not going to be in the way, leaving the cable and power supply in the cupboard. The Dot works exactly as if it was plugged in. When we are finished in the kitchen, the Dot goes back to its parking space in the cupboard and charges up ready for next time. Amusingly, you can still talk to it inside the cupboard and it replies, albeit muffled.I get around four hours of music out of the battery. That's about three hours longer than my attention span, so the battery life isn't really an issue. If I'm in the shed for longer than four hours, I'll bring the power supply and plug it in. If the Dot is on 'standby' not playing music, the battery will last longer. If you want to use Dot to control your Smart Home with voice control, it works best if you have a Dot in each room, permanently plugged in. If you are standing in the dark upstairs, it's really annoying bellowing at Alexa to turn the lights on when the Dot is downstairs. It's even worse if you left it in the shed. A battery base is not really suitable if your Dots are primarily used for your Smart Home devices. If you use your Dot mostly for listening to music around the house, a battery base is a great thing to have. One last thing - someone suggested it's cheaper / easier to 'buy a USB power cable and plug the Dot into a normal power bank'. You can't do that. The Dot runs off 12 volts and USB only supplies 5v, unless you have a USB C power bank with adaptive charging for laptops - which cost over £100.

It does the job
I use it to listen to music in the bath/shower as I don't have sockets that are suitable close to the bathroom. It works fine, just doesn't last super long and you do need to make sure to plug it back in as soon as you're done with it, lest you forget about it and it dies on you within a few hours. I'd say it's a bit overpriced at full price considering how quickly it drains and how long it takes to fully charge, but if you can get it when it's discounted it's a handy gadget.I'd like to add that this does NOT fit the 5th gen Dot. I received mine today and thought I'd try it with the base as I saw some people in the Q&As saying it fits and it most certainly does not.The shape is sightly different meaning the area where the cable plugs into isn't flush with the cutout in the base, as well as it being more centred as there's only one place to plug a cable in unlike the 4th Gen which has two ports. As the cable that connects Echo to base is bracket ] shaped and designed for the exact distance between ports on the 4th gen and the base, it won't reach the port of the 5th gen. It should work okay if you get a different cable to connect the two but the Echo still wouldn't sit nice and tightly in the base.So don't purchase this unless you have a 4th gen Dot to use it with.

Prime day deal
Firstly, may I point out that these battery bases are well over priced on their normal market value to which I wouldn't even consider. However, I got this on the last prime day deal for 5.99 which makes it a great little gadget to have. I use it with a 5th generation echo dot and get around 5 hours batery life at just under mid level volume. I would suggest that they would sell so much better if they brought the price down to a more affordable / palatable value.

These are great
These are great units, bought silly cheap at £5.99 and what a bargain at that. They enable to echo dot to be taken outside for about 5hours. I wish I’d bought loads of them.

Neat Solution To A Problem I Didn't Know I Had!
My apartment's electrical service runs "hot" - voltage runs between 122-124 at any given time. I discovered this some years ago when I put a voltage meter/protection strip into my DJ audio rack; one volt higher and its automatic shut-down would've been triggered! Yet because it is just below the threshhold of what is considered abnormal, no one has ever tried to fix it. Yet, for this reason, UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply) units fail much faster than in most homes. At one time I had four of them; one for both of my main computers and their peripherals, one for my video rack and another for my wife's Mac studio. Yet within a couple of years, all of them failed except for that last one (now showing incoming voltage at 122). So replacing their batteries or entire units haven't been a priority. On the rare occasion that our power has gone out, the main computers don't seem to have too much trouble. But this last time, it was Alexa, my Echo Dot that had the trouble.Suffice it to say that it's been a while since I set up my Echo Dot and had to hit the web. Resetting was a PAIN! It took way more out of my day than I'd have liked...probably more than when I originally set it up! In any case, I decided that I didn't want to live THAT adventure over again, so when I saw this battery base, I decided to give it a try. First off, it's a neat lookin' thing! While my Dot is blue, the black base makes it POP! There are openings at the bottom of the cup that holds the speaker so you can still see the status ring, and the Dot itself is secured by a hard U-shaped power coupler that connects the battery to the Echo Dot. You then just use the power cord that came with the Dot to power the battery pack. While it alleges a 4-5 hour run time without being plugged-in, my use will basically be that of a UPS; emergency back-up power. Although, I must say that it's nice to be able to unplug the whole thing and carry it from room to room.Since I just installed it days ago, I cannot comment on "battery life" or anything else usually asked. All I know is that it fits perfectly and works perfectly outta the box and I'm very happy with the looks, price and ease of use. It nicely fits both my desk and my budget!

FINALMENTE!!!
