Protector failed and resulted in melted composite decking
We used the protector on our composite deck with our firepit. It failed and resulted in our deck being ruined with melted spots. The photos show:--Our firepit with a 23 inch base, that fit completely inside the 24 inch protector--The general spot on the deck where there is a circle from the melted spots the base was touching and three peculiar spots in the middle where material transferred from the protector to the decking--A close up of a melted spot on the deck where the protector material embedded itself in to the composite boards--The top of the protector, showing how it failed to reflect the heat and was scorched as it failed--The bottom of the protector, showing what came off in the middle and also melted into the deck

WOW! This thing WORKS!!!!
I admit I was a bit skeptical, considering all the other deck protectors out there are in the hundreds of dollars range, but this product had good reviews so I thought I would try it. I have a metal fire pit on my composite deck, and was worried that the radiant heat from the bottom of the firepit might either melt, warp, or discolor the deck since the slats are plastic. Prior to purchasing this item, I kept putting my hand on the deck when I had a fire going - to see how hot it was, and I would occasionally move the firepit around so that it wouldn't get one certain spot too hot. I was a little paranoid every time we had a fire going, so I ultimately decided to give this a try, and I am SO GLAD I did!!! Now, no matter how long the fire is going for, or how hot it gets, the deck protector underneath is still COOL TO THE TOUCH! I don't know how it manages to stay cool, but it does. I wouldn't believe it if I didn't experience it firsthand, but this thing is awesom!!!. Totally worth the money to have the peace of mind for protecting my nice deck. I thought it was going to be a rigid piece of material, but it is actually flexible and arrived rolled up in a poster tube. I unrolled it and let it lay flat for a while and it now has no curls or indication that it was rolled up for days during the shipping process. I put it under the firepit before I start the fire, and I remove it when the fire is done. I wouldn't want to leave it outside all the time because it is a fabric-type material. I just keep it indoors when not in use (under the sofa), near my patio door :-). Anyway, bottom line here is that you should get this because IT WORKS REALLY WELL!!!! A great value indeed! I will try and post a picture next time I have a fire burning, along with the temperatures of the fire vs the heat pad. You will be amazed.

FirePad can to work with hot fire pits
I have the Solo Bonfire fire pit on a ring stand (from solo), so the bottom of the fire pit is 6" above the pad (3" ring plus 3+ from the base of the fire pit till the fire pit chamber (I double-check this info with Solo). The temperature in the fire pit is around 1200 degrees, but still, after two usages, there are holes in the fire pad on the surface facing the ground. It is just a matter of time until there will be a hole all the way through. The product description on Amazon says that the fire pit needs to be 6" above the pad (which it is) and that it can work up to 1800 degrees, which I way below. I called the manufacture, and their response was that their fire pad does not work with solo stoves because it runs too hot (what??), and their only solution was to return the product. If you have Solo fire pit do not buy this pad.

Deck Freezes Over
It's amazing! This 1/8 of an inch thick material could solve global warming (that's not how any of this works). Seriously, my pit is a chimney style and sits 6 inches from the ground, the FirePad could care less, even when my pit was red hot, you can touch the pad and it's cold. No heat gets through or absorbed, all is reflected. There's a review here that the guy returned the Firepad and didn't even tested it, I pity the fool.
