I’m happy with the TCXO I got.
I’m happy with the TCXO I got. It came boxed and sealed in an anti-static bag. The board looked neat and the solder joints all looked good. I was fine with cleaning the flux off the back because it assured me they had used it. It was applied in neat lines. A little alcohol and it was quickly gone. So, I dug out my SINAD software and zapped my FT-817ND with 1KHz at 7.2MHz for a 12dB SINAD baseline. Mostly because I could. Then I swapped in the new TCXO and reset to 12dB again. Sensitivity was 1.7dB better, SNR was 1.2dB better and noise was down by 0.75%. THD was up, but that’s not what you might think. That’s the harmonics of the 1KHz modulation at 2, 3, 4, 5, etc. KHz. With the better sensitivity and lower noise, those spikes pop out of the floor a bit more, just as the signal does. They’re not generated by the TCXO. The SINAD meter needle was noticeably more stable. Quite the “tell” in itself. All a pleasant surprise considering the “rap” these things have. Then I scanned the band for birdies. I still had the old Yaesu birdie at 7.240, but the rest of 40M was fine. That’s really the only birdie that I keep finding. Of all the dumb places for Yaesu to leave a birdie…I consider the TCXO swap a success. I’m really happy with the purchase.

There are some bad 3rd party TCXO's for the 817 -- this is not one. It works FB.
This seems to work FB. It is very clean. I only found a couple of very minor birdies (only one on 7.254Mhz that could possibly interfere with a very weak LSB station on 40m in perfectly quiet CONDX). I also noticed that the OEM LO had some birdies of its own too. I would imagine that they all produce some very minor spurious signals -- even the OEM TCXO. However, I think there are some out there that spray trash all over the band. This is not one of them.

No good
Cardboard box was crushed on delivery. Gave it a try anyway. Don't sit flat on the radio. Sounds so bad.

Works perfectly in my FT-857
After removing the reference oscillator from my FT-857 and installing this TCXO I noticed the radio seemed to have less noise than before on the hf bands. Worked right out of the box can definitely recommend this one!

Does what it says on the tin..
Finding OEM parts for an FT-817 is like trying to find gold-plated rocking horse turds.. and if you can find them they are just as expensive. This TCXO took less than 2 minutes to install and so far has proven to be exactly as advertised.

As Advertised
