Carrion Comfort

J'étais assez sceptique quant à ce livre dont le point de départ est la 2e guerre mondiale. Ce sujet est délicat, étant données les atrocités qui s'y sont déroulées, j'avais quelques craintes d'avoir à lire une mauvaise mise en scene de la 2e guerre mondiale. De plus, aussi "fascinante" cette période de l'histoire peut être, elle ne demeure pas moins terriblement affligeante et grave. J'ai donc hésité avant de me procurer Carrion Comfort. Et puis j'ai franchi le pas, curieuse de connaître la nouvelle interprétation de la 2e GM, curieuse de voir cet événement différemment, du point de vue d'un auteur de SF que je lis d'ailleurs régulièrement.Le livre commence tres bien, je l'ai trouvé tres engageant, des le début. D'entrée de jeu, on fait la connaissance de Saul Laski, survivant de la 2e GM. On est plongé dans son histoire, dans les souffrances et humiliations subies dans les camps, et celà fait d'autant plus froid dans le dos que ces camps on réellement existé: Chelmno, pour ne citer que lui; je salue d'ailleurs le travail de recherche documentaire de D.SIMMONS.On apprend ensuite que Saul Laski, devenu docteur en psychologie, cherche ses tortionnaires, un en particulier. Il se lie d'amitié avec un certain nombre de personnages adjuvants, dont le sherif Gentry et Natalie... Je ne voudrais pas trop en révéler sur l'histoire, donc je vais en rester là. L'originalité de cette réinterprétation de la deuxieme GM tient au fait que celle ci repose sur des causes surnaturelles: il existerait des êtres (humains ou non, on ne le sait pas), dotés de pouvoirs qui leur permettraient de manipuler mentalement les plus faibles. Ces gens-là auraient ainsi porvoqué la guerre, par jeu, pour le fun. Dans sa préface, si vous avez la version 2010, Dan Simmons qualifie ces gens de "vampires" et lance d'ailleurs une réflexion intéressante sur l'existance de ces fameux vampires dans la vie de tous les jours. En effet, qui n'a jamais tenté de faire faire quelque chose à quelqu'un pour servir ses propres intérets? Bref! je m'éloigne de l'avis que je souhaitais donner de ma lecture ^^! C'est tout de meme l'amorce d'une réflexion intéressante sur la nature humaine et sur les rapports que nous entretenons les uns avec les autres, que ce soit au boulot, en famille ou meme en couple! A chacun de voir s'il est vampire ou non ^^!Premiere moitié du livre captivante, puis relachement. Il y a beaucoup de personnages, mais le problème est que D.Simmons s'attarde tres longuement sur chacun d'eux, sur chacun de leurs faits et gestes, sur absolument chacune de leur pensées, sans vraiment faire avancer le Schmilblick (l'intrigue). Tout ca ponctué de scenes érotiques, qui pour moi servent uniquement à réveiller l'intéret du lecteur qui vient de se prendre 4 chapitres de lourdeurs. Le probleme c'est que j'ai fini par me lasser de ces lourdeurs: j'ai fini par lire les 4 ou 5 derniers chapitres du livre, et ma foi, j'ai eu l'impression de ne rien avoir raté du tout entre la page 400 et la fin du livre!En résumé, je le trouve assez bon ce livre, mais il faut vraiment faire preuve de beaucoup de patience pour accepter que l'intrigue soit ainsi sans cesse repoussée et finalement diluée dans des détails souvent lourds ( sur 740 pages, quand meme!), et qui m'ont beaucoup ennuyée, malheureusement. Mais ce n'est que mon avis ^^! Selon moi en tout cas, le meilleur de Simmons reste "Terror". Je n'ai pas eu l'occasion de lire la saga Hypérion, qui semble etre un chef d'oeuvre, mais cela ne saurait tarder ^^! Bonne lecture à vous!

While Carrion Comfort is dragged down by its over bloated writing, it's still quite good. Ultimately, the reader must be willing to invest serious time if they want to read this brick of a book, but in my opinion Dan Simmons delivers in this sprawling horror novel.To me, the novel itself isn't nearly as horrifying as the premise. To be physically and mentally manipulated, powerless under the spell of someone with the ability to basically take over your mind and make you do as they please, all while you're aware of it happening, is truly scary to think about. Simmons does a decent job of conveying the feelings of those put in this awful predicament, especially in one scene during the first half of the book which takes place in a restaurant.I actually found a few hundred pages in the middle somewhat tough to sit through. I even had three stars in my mind, but, in the end, Simmons delivers an exciting final part, and then some.Characters are nowhere near as compelling as those you might find in a Stephen King or Ken Follet novel, but still were pretty good overall. Although only a handful are really important, there are dozens of characters in this book, and Simmons manages to at least keep them from being cardboard cut-outs.In the end, Carrion Comfort is what an almost nine-hundred-page novel should be. It has a huge scope, and over four decades pass from prologue to epilogue. The tagline for this novel should be good enough, but not great enough, meaning it's good enough to invest the many hours needed to read it, but fails to be a truly great novel. As it stands, there are some terrific, exciting, horrifying instances, but just not enough of them to completely negate the slower paced parts and heavy-handed writing.

Dan Simmons is one of my favourite authors and this is one of his earlier works. Unlike his other books, this one suffered from a couple of errors. A few spelling mistakes and so on were present, which I would normally not expect on a Simmons novel. More disturbing was how one handgun magically mutated from a .45 to a 9mm Browning from one scene to the next. This kind of continuity error is quite jarring for me and it brought me out of the story a bit and made me look out for other similar mistakes, which detracted from the enjoyment of the story a bit.Overall though, I suppose it's a small detail. The story is quite engaging although some of the descriptions do go on for too long without adding anything to the story so I kind of skimmed over several pages throughout the book.Overall it's still a great book though. As you can tell, my complaints are more technical and to do with the writing itself than the story.

Now one of my favourite authors!

This book comes with the blessing of the pope of horror himself, Stephen King, who called it 'one of the 3 best horror novels in the 20th century'. In line with such (well-intentioned) pomposity this book is well over 700 pages. In the introduction the writer said that he had an early editor who wanted to slash it's size, many times while skipping pages I found myself sympathising with this abandoned editor.The book is well-written with some very convincing passages that describe the telepathic abilities of a special breed of vampires. The general conspiracy theory theme gives the book an additional injection of creepiness (these vampires are responsible for most of the mischief in the world). Some of the characters are interesting and appealing.However the plot meanders mercilessly and so much time is spent on a neurological explanation of the special abilities of the vampire that it all becomes tedious. I certainly would try to read a shorter book by the author, but unlike Stephen King and Justin Cronin in his soon-to-be-completed vampire trilogy, the epic narrative simply does not come off here.. As for vampire conspiracies, try 'Blade' and 'Daybreakers' where at least the presentation is brisk and includes some levity. And for the most fun in reading about vampires try 'Interview with a Vampire' both film and book version - now that lady can write and also tell a story!
