Beautiful book from a thoughtful author. Never not encouraged reading anything from this man. It’s like the burdens just lift off you.

If you should discover within your heart , a longing to be more joyful and peaceful ,then this short book will be a truly great help.If you do not rush but slowly read and stop oft to pray about the content,I think you will be greatly helped . In the end it will clarify so helpfully just what matters …

The simple message of this book is so fundamental to the Christian life that, were I to state it, many would say, “I know that, I don’t need a book to tell me that” but this wholehearted look at Jesus, the real Jesus, fills the heart points you away from you to Him. It’s a lovely, refreshing, life changing read.

I learned a lot from the book

A fantastic simple read, that if read with humble, self-examination can be a great help to reorient your soul in finding hope, help and peace in Jesus.

Dane Ortlund verspricht Tiefgang. Damit meint er vor allem Wachstum, sprich Jesus ähnlicher zu werden (Heiligung). Seine These: es gilt nicht über das Evangelium hinauszuwachsen, es wie Erwachsen gewordene Menschen irgendwann abzulegen, sondern die gute Botschaft von Jesus zu vertiefen, auf sein Herz anzuwenden. Gerade das führe zum Wachstum. Wie sein Bestsellerbuch im Englischen „Gentle and lowly“ lebt das Buch von der Perspektive auf Jesus. Kurze inhaltlichsreiche Kapitel machen das Leseerlebnis angenehm. Die Bibel kommt nicht zu kurz. Vor allem macht er uns Lesern die Puritaner schmackhaft, die er immer wieder zitiert. Diese Richtung zeichnet sich durch eine große Jesuslieb aus, ihm von reinen Motiven, von einem gereinigten Herzen her nachzufolgen. Leider ist das deutsche Cover so gar nicht ansprechend und wie ich finde erst auf den zweiten Blick verständlich. Wirklich schade, da der ersten (ästhetischen) Eindruck nicht anregt das Buch in die Hand zu nehmen. Das englische Layout ist hierbei viel gelungener.

Deeper by Dane Ortlund is one of the most helpful books I’ve read on what it actually means to grow in Christ. I'm not sure how I came across it yet after ordering it and mentioning it to my dad while staying at my parent's place, he went downstairs in the basement and brought up the book so I was able to start reading it before having received my copy. Unlike so many books that focus only on lofty theology or vague encouragement, Ortlund gets very practical. The book is all about real steps for drawing near to Christ—not in a checklist or self-help way, but in the way Scripture actually calls us to. What makes this book so powerful is how it confronts the subtle lie we often believe: that we must somehow be “good enough” before approaching Jesus, that we must first clean ourselves up in order to have a relationship with Him. Ortlund exposes this as nothing more than works righteousness. Instead, he shows how true spiritual change comes not from striving harder, but from pressing deeper into Christ’s heart and resting in His grace. Ortlund takes you through what real sanctification looks like—not performance, not moralism, but dependence. He explains how we truly come to know who Christ is: by seeing that His very nature is to welcome sinners, to meet us in our weakness, and to draw us closer even when we fail. This is where real transformation happens—not by trying to fix ourselves, but by realizing that Jesus Himself is our sanctification. This book isn’t abstract theology; it’s the lived reality of the gospel applied. Every chapter pushes you closer to Christ in a way that is freeing, not burdensome. If you’ve ever felt stuck in your walk with God or weighed down by the sense that you’re not “enough,” Deeper will radically reorient your view of who Jesus is and how He changes us.

Such a good book! Was not only refreshing for my own soul, but for my wife's as well. We enjoyed it so much we bought copies for each of the leaders at our church as a Christmas gift.
