Perfect for 9-10yo girls who love cats
I recently bought this book for both my goddaughter (soon to be 10, finishing 4th grade) and my other honorary niece (just turned 10 and just finished 4th grade), who live on opposite sides of the country and have never met. Both girls love cats and fantasy novels, and they often like the same books (including the Familiars series and Wings of Fire). Both girls are obsessed: their moms report that they've both read the book multiple times within a week. This book has inspired cat poetry and long kid rambles, including a convoluted explanation of why there are actually 218 cats, and how the other other cat isn't one of the 217. Both girls are bookworms, so I can't say how this book plays to reluctant readers. One prefers regular novels most of the time (e.g. prefers the novel versions of Wings of Fire) but still loves this graphic novel. Both have decided this book/series is their new favorite thing. I am happily racking up all the auntie points... and buying them each book 2 to celebrate the end of the school year.

7 yo girl approved!
My 7 yo girl is very into graphic novels right now (and cats) so this was a great fit! Cute story about teamwork, friendship, and responsibility.

Fun and adorable.
This would have been five stars from me, but I felt the book struggles until it gets to the cats. In fact, it was a three stars from me until the cats were introduced. The cats show up early on and from that point through to the end, the book is a solid five stars. I laughed aloud at some of the cat antics. The storyline might be a bit political. If your child reads it, you’ll need to explain that something what is right for a comic book character doesn’t always translate to real life. I’d think kids would get that on their own, but a lot of kids are basically raising themselves and miss out on a lot. I think any cat lover, adult or tween, would love this.

We Love Katie!
I bought this for my 8yo son who loves cats. Though most would call this a "girl's" book, he absolutely loved it and I can see why! Reading along with him was a joy! It is well-written, clever, funny, and heart-warming. My younger kids enjoy listening to us read it too! I look forward to reading the next book in this series.
