One of the most "under-rated" games ever, and only because of it's difficulty
I'm 33, and at the moment have brought out my NES for my son(and for me)and now I'm grabbing all of my favorite games of my childhood, and among the many of them is "BTTF". The many negative reviews and other people saying "this game sucks",hated it for the simple fact of it's extreme difficulty. You have your basic simple premise to dodge bully's,hoola hoop girls, pits, and oil, ridiculous I know, but fun. The controls are basic and easy and are are smoothly done for it's time. At the end of a few blocks of skating, dodging and throwing bowling balls at your enemies, your first mission awaits, and it's the mini games that frustrate so many gamers, yes it's difficult and it can be done and therefore it has a good game-play value, not simply a game you beat and put in the dust-pile of old games. There's four mini-games(the cafe, the school of blocking hearts, the dance and the finale in the Delorion.) Maybe for me it's just the nostalgia factor but I'm playing this on break and still cant put it down. Your a true gamer if you beat this one.

Not exactly like the movie. But worth the challenge.
Most people would think that older games designed for outdated consoles wouldn't pose much of a challenge for a modern gamer. We have high definition, 3D games that are more complex than anything on the old NES. Well, think again. After mastering the most popular NES games, I tried this one and found it to be more of a challenge than I was expecting. From elaborate street scenes complete with bullies and obstacles, to the gymnasium where the 'Enchantment under the sea' dance was held, this game certainly has its place in any vintage game collection.

Mediocre Game, But Still Enjoyable
Anyone that knows me knows that I have a soft spot for mediocre NES/SNES/Genesis games. In the mid 2000's I hit some hard financial times and had to sell off all my top tier classic video games, leaving me only with the crummy games which wouldn't have fetched much money. It was humbling, I learned to appreciate the crummy games all over again, even learned to love them for their flaws. The biggest complaint with Back To The Future on NES is that it appears to have little to do with the hit movie it is based upon. It's a reasonable complaint, the game is mostly a shooter style broken up by a handful of minigames. Much of the game is spent as a vertical autoscroller where Marty is walking to the end of the street block while avoiding enemies and other hazards. There's a photo of Marty and his siblings, and Marty must collect clocks to prevent the photo from fading, which costs a life. If Marty gets hit, he will fall, which will waste time and take away powerups. There's only a couple of powerups, which are the bowling ball and the skateboard. The bowling ball can be used to eliminate enemies, and the skateboard gives Marty a tremendous boost in speed. Although the skateboard is very difficult to control due to its' speed, it is tremendously helpful and will get Marty to the end of the block much faster. The minigames at the end of every four or five blocks are difficult. Marty will have to throw milkshakes at bullies similar to the arcade game Tapper, Marty will have to block hearts thrown by Lorraine, Marty will have to collect music notes with his guitar at the Enchantment Under the Sea dance, etc. The player has to reach certain point thresholds during these minigames in order to advance to the next street block, and failure to meet the threshold forces the player to replay the street block just prior to the minigame. The biggest complain I find valid is the minigames. The player only gets one chance before being forced to replay the last street block level, and the game really should have been just a bit more forgiving and given the player at least a second chance. Another complaint must be given to the controls of the game. Although they are responsive enough, I have to believe that the jump button is a programming oversight since Marty is incapable of jumping over the park benches. I think the trash cans can be leaped over, but it doesn't always work. The jump mechanic, in my opinion, needed to be tweaked. Thankfully, Back To The Future has always been a cheaper NES game for collectors. It sells for about $9, which is pretty fair. Despite some uninspired gameplay, I still find this game to be somewhat enjoyable. It's one of the more playable games in its' respective price range, so it's worth it.

It does boot up on my NES after a few attempts, and it does work somewhat fine, the cartridge itself on the other hand, not so much. The labels, shell and front pins are extremely damaged, looks like it got stuck in somebody's flooded basement for years, but for an NES game for $6 that's something I had to expect. As for the game itself, I honestly don't see why people refer to this as one of the "worst games of all time", it's a pretty shoddily made game but I don't think it's actually that bad. Overall it's 100% still playable even in it's current state, however please keep the cartridge quality in mind.
