It has a hole from top to bottom but not on the sides.

hi i brought 2 lots and it filled a 5lt storer container `28 rows, and each row has 15 blocks in it i use these a lot with maths games and counting with my 3 kids ages 4,7,10 there maths have improved ,its visual and hands on learning where they are actualy working it out with the blocks. the 4 year old start with a block of 4 then keep adding 1 till they can count to 20 then still using the same block of 4 add 2 ,he has just turned 4 ask him to give me 10 pink 6 yellow 3 red 1 green he puts them in rows then we count them together also use different coloured dice with diff amounts on it for the older kids, an dice and blocks together for all 3 kids also use t h t u use diff colours 7,35 6= 7 yellow 3 pink 5 red 1 green ,etc etc

what is the hole diamiter?

I am horrid at math. I have a plastic Drill Gauge card (the ones with holes matching drill bits) & it matches the 23/64 hole. Says 9.13mm under it. Google has a good converter. It's not that deep. Hope that helps.

How useful is the activity guide? I am trying to decide between this set and the math link cubes which do not offer any guides.

Sorry, I didn't use the activity guide. Our kindergarden did a sit down with parents about the cubes, ten tables, red/yellow circle chips & some example pages. It was easy to figure out how it worked though. Four yellow squares with two blue, yea!, visual math! They all seem like cheap plastic, so I'd recommend just going with cheap (but safe) ones. I chose this set because at the time it 'was' the cheapest & had descent reviews. They do fit snuggly, some are looser then others & I have seen other cubes that handle better. This have done fine for us. If the core teaching is still being taught in a few years my other child will use them too.... for math. Not for the Lego cities that are being created now due to summer. Sorry i was not much help.
