Not Really A Fan
I have a family and feel like I'm almost constantly cooking or baking. I was very excited to get this product as my favorite knives are beginning to get a bit dull. I was waiting on pins and needles for it to arrive. When it did come, I realized that it was lighter than I expected. I thought that would be an advantage. I was wrong. This was not an easy product for me to use. There is a fine grit side and a coarse grit side. The coarse grit is more for knicks, dings, severe sharpening purposes. The fine grit is for fine tuning your blade. I thought you could use this for either ceramic or stainless steel. Not so much for the ceramic. Both sides completely ate the blade, mangling it even more. I thought, "Okay, maybe I was wrong and it wasn't for ceramic." I wasn't worried about the loss of my knife because, hey, I couldn't use it before I sharpened it anyway, right? Next I tried the stainless steel blade. It did work decently for that one. Until I cut myself. Normally, I would say that this was my fault. Not in this case, however. See, the suction cup at the bottom that is supposed to make the unit secure didn't want to work at first. It took me numerous attempts to get it to work. After I finally got it, I figured that maybe I had been trying to do it wrong. That was until it popped up in the middle of sharpening. It wasn't a severe cut that required medical attention, but it was still pretty bad. It also shouldn't have happened. I don't know if my unit was faulty or not. I can't even get it to suction at all now. It did point out a design flaw to me, though. There is no hand protection. This product relies solely on that suction cup to secure it and therefore keep your hands away from it. There is absolutely nothing to keep your hands safe (i.e. a handle, hand rest, etc.). For this reason and the ceramic knife reason, I had to give it a three. Maybe your experience will be better than mine. I hope so!I received this product at a discount, but my opinion is unbiased.

Sweet Gadget to have on hand!!
Having just invested in some new knife sets and investing in a class to improve my skills in the kitchen, of course, any good cook will need to keep their knives sharpened & I'm no exception. I've become very picky about my knives and they must be very sharp. I tend to have more accidents with a dull knife than a sharp one, so I like having a knife sharpener on hand when working in the kitchen. The sharpener I had previously was purchased off a pull rack at a grocery store. It was not up to standards and I was sorely disappointed. That's why I purchased this knife sharpener and tossed the old one out.Overall, I'm very pleased with my purchase. The favorite feature for this unit is the suction cup on the bottom. It makes the unit very stable and secure as you sharpen your knives. There are two sides to it, one side is a heavier grit. That side is if you have almost no sharp edge left on your knife, need to reset the edge or rework it. I probably won't me using that side much at all. The white stones on the right side are a fine grit, and they are for fine sharpening and shaping your knife. This side works nicely. To finish my sharpening session I will get my honing stick out and run the knives on it too, ... it just makes the final touch so much sharper and the cuts smoother. I usually test my final sharpening session by running my knifes on a tomato skin. If it passes that test, I'm very happy.I would recomment this unit to anyone interested. It can take time to learn the fine aspects of sharpening your knives, but it is well worth it & honestly, you'll save so much money by skipping the professional knife sharpener who can be expensive. I purchased this item at a discounted price in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion. All written here is truly my own honest unbiased view..
