It is the standard for a reason
I am an adult learning Cello. When I was a kid I played trombone, so (while rusty) I already know how to read music. This book is not really aimed for my use case... but I am starting with it anyways, because for stringed instruments suzuki is the standard. It is what my wife briefly learned on for violin when she had to take a few strings courses as a music major (her focus was piano and claranet though), it is what my daughter is learning on for viola, and so if I am going to play with them for practice while we are getting good enough to play 'real music', or to practice with other beginners, this is the clear direction to go as everyone else is also using it. And as an adult learner with some music experience... it is pretty slow but easy enough to burn through and catch up, while providing a logical progression of skills and patterns. I am supplementing with some other free scales and practice sheets to keep things a bit more challenging and add some variety, but it isn't as bad and as boring as I expected. At the very least I will catch up with the rest of the family fairly quickly by the time they graduate from book 3, and it should be more interesting by then.

Great with an instructor
Suzuki Cello School Volume 1- Only purchased this because my instructor uses this method in our classes. In my opinion, it’s terrible for anyone who is trying to learn on their own unless you are much better at watching youtube for potential set up instruction than I am. Having said that, I am using this book for my practice in combination with The Art of Cello Playing, Cello Playing for Music Lovers and working with my instructor. I have found some great video clips on Youtube for each exercise in this book which I really appreciate since again, I need to hear how each piece is supposed to sound as I’m practicing. If I were only working on my own, I would probably get the String Builder by Samuel Applebaum ( and recommended by Jim Aikin in Picture Yourself Playing Cello).

YOU REALLY NEED THE CD TO GO ALONG WITH THE BOOK
If you order the book by itself, I could see where one would be disappointed. However, with the CD the book is excellent. The book starts with a couple of simple exercises on the open A and D, then adds new notes with the fingering labeled. Very helpful for a beginner! Almost immediately one plays, and stick with me here, Twinkle Twinkle, HOWEVER, there are 4 somewhat rapid bowing patterns used, so right away you are learning rhythm and timing and fast bowing - all very useful things! In addition, it gets your ears used to the open string interval. You can tell by ear if those 2 strings are in tune. Starting on the next page, more simple melodies are introduced, and quickly one learns to count the beat and take repeats. Turn the page and you start using dynamics - crescendo, decresendo, ritard, etc. The songs are kind of fast, so you learn right away that you can't drag your feet, you have to keep up. This is real life in an orchestra - you have to count the beat, respect the dynamics, and keep up. This system is a huge help! I am using it in addition to the work I'm doing with a new and wonderful teacher, although I'm doing this on my own on the side. I highly recommend the book AND CD for anyone starting out, or even if you've been at it for a little while and are not progressing as quickly as you would like. It's also fun to have something to play along with, and to learn what it's supposed to sound like. It can get old just sawing away on one's own.

I am not following the suzuki method but my teacher is happy for me to use it and I found the book excellent. Plenty of useful exercises and interesting tunes for an adult beginner (unlike other books). Navigated through it nicely in one month (could already read music)
