Tastes Great Just Like When I Was a Kid
I love these coffee cakes, and used to pick them up in the deli and vending machines back in the 70's , 80's and 90's. They stay fresh past expiration date, but last for months if you put them in fridge. 7 seconds in microwave from fridge is all thats needed. I order the 5 pack from Amazon when they are on sale since I live in Hawaii now. Used to live in NYC and really missed eating these. Same company makes Little Debbie, but Drakes are much better. So glad Drakes started making coffee cakes again.*** Update 4/2022***Still love these, but last batch came with only a couple weeks left on their expiration date. It's an amazon issue, but putting them in the fridge will keep them fresh for months. As noted above, I just microwave them for a few seconds and they are good. Just not as good as when they are fresh.

Taste Great, Dependability Sucks
We all know that Drakes Cakes are great tasting. Unfortunately, their dependability really is zero. Twice I ordered 5 boxes of cakes. Both time I receive only four boxes. Amazon made good the issue by crediting me the money. So, if your order the cakes, do not order more than four boxes because I think that's as high as they can count.

Will Order Again...
I was raised in Boston, Ma. in the 1960's where Drake's Cakes used to be baked so these were a staple of my childhood and onward. Many decades later, I was so sad to see Drake's Cakes discontinued since I had always greatly preferred them to any Hostess products. Then, by the time Drake's finally made its comeback, I was no longer living in New England and they were impossible to get here in the Mid West. Not having had a Drake's product in about 15 years, two months ago when I accidentally found them online, I carefully read the contrasting reviews and so wasn't sure what to expect. I knew what Drake's Yankee Doodles (my all-time favorite) and Drake's Coffee Cakes SHOULD taste like, but was underwhelmed based on reveiws that is what I'd receive. I mean really, after the Yankee Doodles originally came back as just a knockoff Frosted Hostess Cupcake (NO, YANKEE DOODLES WERE NEVER FROSTED!!!!) who knew what to expect. Anyway, I figured it was worth a try. Either I'd find some old favorites that I eternally missed or I'd forever get this yen out of my system. I placed a very large order and the shipping was only about $6.50 which was amazing for such a large carton. For that low shipping charge it was like the Manufacturer in Tennessee basically sent me my cakes for free. Also, I must add that all of the boxes I received had expiration dates a good four to six weeks in the future so there was no worry about the freshness of the items I received. I ate many boxes without freezing them and later put the remainder in the freezer for future use. The Drake's Coffee Cakes were slightly different than the originals but still pretty darn close. The main difference is that the topping is not as soft as on the originals and neither was the cake itself as soft and fluffy, but they were still very tasty. The Yankee Doodles also tasted pretty close to the originals but what I noticed was how much drier they were than the originals. This bothered me because it was always the utter moistness of Yankee Doodles that I loved. The ones I received were not too dry to eat but Yankee Doodles were always known for how insanely moist they were and these new cakes were not that moist. Then I finally realized that since these new Yankee Doodles were no longer baked in cupcake papers like the old ones always were, that perhaps this accounted for them being less moist. Anyway, what I discovered as I continued to eat through my stash is that after freezing and thawing, both the Coffee Cakes and the Yankee Doodles were less dry and much moister than those eaten without being stored in the freezer and later defrosted. I would say that after freezing and defrosting, the Yankee Doodles are quite close to the originals in taste and texture and the Coffee Cakes, though moister after freezing, are a little less so. All in all, these are extremely close to the snack cakes Drake's always used to produce. I would say if you want the closest possible experience to the snack cakes of yore, freeze them and defrost them before eating. Somehow, freezing and defrosting them makes them moister. These were a nice treat and I would order both the Yankee Doodles and the Coffee Cakes again. The extremely fair shipping fee and the fact that the maker sent me all very fresh product far from their "best by" date will definitely keep me ordering these on a regular basis.
