Q: Can this be used with any vacuum pump, or does it need its own?

You can only use the Zwilling vacuum pump with this item.

Q: How can I get manufacturer to sell me replacement lids for those that have broken? Repeated emails to them are ignored.

Q: The directions say to freeze your food - before - using the vacuum device. Why is that?

Because if you place a liquid and use the suction device, it will pull out the liquid. I always freeze my lasagna in individual servings and just wrap them tightly and once they are frozen, I place in the tray or bag and use the suction device. Works everytime. Great for pre made meatballs for subs.

Q: Does it come with a sealer?

This is the set of two containers. Buy the starter set if you wish to get the vacuum sealer pump.
