Gentle, effective, easy to use.
I would give this product 10 stars if I could. My natural hair color is a golden level 7-8, and I had used a demi-permanent dye by Wella (level 4N and 5G) that came out waaay too dark, basically black. I didn't want to use a typical color remover that would just be glorified bleach - like many color removers are - because I wasn't trying to lighten my natural hair color. No amount of shampooing and rinsing with baking soda and vitamin C helped take the color out. After doing lots of research, I decided to try this product. Yes, it smells heinous. Not as bad as color oops, in my opinion, but still really bad. BUT - It works. Two rounds of this product, over the span of a weekend took the demi-permanent dye out completely. The 10 vol developer that I'd used with the dye naturally bumped up my base by about a half level, and left it warmer, but I'll take that over dull, inky looking hair any day of the week. My hair also feels soft, not brittle or damaged. One round of a decent bond-building mask sorted any potential, undetected damage out.The smell fades relatively quickly, and the application process is very straightforward and quick. 10/10.

Works fast
I used this product after attempting to dye my hair burgundy when it was originally a bleached caramel color. I didn’t know I was supposed to add a copper tone first before adding the burgundy color. I was left with purple hair instead. The next day, I used this product and it worked amazing and took all the color out. I do say that you should purchase a hair mask while buying this. I used matrix instacure mask and left it in for 10 minutes while in the shower and then washed out. The reason being was that when I washed and shampooed the color remover out, my hair felt like tangled corn hair. After using a mask it felt soft and normal again. The color stripper does leave a smell in your hair, but it does the job amazingly.

Works but has its limits
prior to salerm i used the color oops which totally backfired, turning my roots orange [my dyed hair is a dark dark brown with auburn and violet tones and i've been dying my hair dark for over 10 years - dying/highlighting for over 20 years], despite following the directions to the letter. But this stuff, fixed the orange and stripped the dark [almost black but not quite] from the bottom up and fixed the orange somehow. I will have to use a second time after a week or so as stripping your hair is a process, especially of dark colors or red/violets, and it takes many rinses - each time i rinse more comes out slowly but surely. You must be patient especially if you've been coloring for a decade or more and nothing will restore you to your original color if youre using permanent dye and semi-permanent dye - you need to grow your hair out to get to your original color. My goal was to lighten so I could go to a lighter shade, which I refuse to bleach my hair as its not worth the damage, NOT restore it to my orignal shade as that is impossible due to the way the oxidation process of dye on hair follicles. This is what I did besides following the directions;1. Mix eq. parts as directed & apply quickly (it's a gel so its much easier and you get a lot out of it but if you have very thick long hair it would be safer to go with two boxes)- it does stink but nowhere near as badly as color oops which lingered in my hair which was gross - if you rinse and shampoo as I did there's no lingering scent2. Apply a cap (doesn't come with) but also it helps to throw a towel in the dryer to heat up and then wrap over the cap. heat activates it and makes it work better.3. Leave in for 20 minutes (some people say they've left it on longer but I have healthy hair and i try to protect it so i didn't want to chance it - I may leave it in longer next time, however).4. Rinse hair first in shower thoroughly and apply shampoo (no conditioner - not yet) than rinse for 20minutes the first time. IMPORTANT - use a crappy shampoo - the stuff that costs $5 with parabans (etc. the crappy stuff)- Apply shampoo (the crappy stuff again) again & rinse for 5 minutes.- Shampoo one more time (yes, still the crappy one), rinse for 5 minutes apply conditioner (I used a nexus keratin conditioner mixed with a deep conditioner treatment) and rinse for 5 minutes (last time!).It's boring and a process but it pays off! Your hair will thank you if you use a nice conditioning treatment (I used a garnier papaya treatment mixed with my nexus keratin conditioner).I'd also say keep using the crappy shampoo as it helps strip that color! DONT BOTHER WITH COLOR OOPS - it's cheap and terrible! This stuff doesn't hurt your scalp either and the smell doesn't linger the way i re-shampoo-ed and rinsed repeatedly (which helps the stripping process as well). RINSE RINSE RINSE!

The good, the bad, and the ugly…
Honest review here to let you know how this product worked for me: I did a box color of light reddish brown a few months ago and then decided I wanted to stop dyeing my hair and let the gray come in naturally. I purchased this set to try to remove the old color to help things along. I mixed the product according to directions and applied it, using a shower cap to help processing. I set a timer for 20 minutes. I then rinsed for a long time and used my cowash. I was a bit mortified when I dried my hair because it was a bright strawberry blonde color. Not natural looking at all. I decided to try another application, and followed the same steps. After drying my hair, it was a weird brighter strawberry blonde color. Panic starts to set in lol. I start googling. I then try an apple cider vinegar rinse. It helps tone it down somewhat, but not much. More googling. I then try washing my hair with Dawn dish soap and using my cowash afterward because Dawn dries out the hair tremendously. Finally, I feel like I’m closer to my original hair color of a light brown. It’s still not perfect, but close, and I don’t look like I have some weird bright unnatural looking hair color. The process didn’t harm my grays any and I can see more of them. As others have mentioned, this product smells horrible and I threw out everything it came into contact with, i.e., towel, mixing bowl, and brush to stir. Thankfully, the smell dissipated from my hair pretty well after the cowash, vinegar rinse and Dawn. So, I guess bottom line is that it will remove color, but it may give you some unwanted results if you have any red coloring in your hair. My hair did not feel damaged after using it twice, so that was a good thing. But I had to spend 4 hours trying to get as close to my natural color as I could between this product and the vinegar rinse and Dawn shampooing. I’m glad I stopped coloring my hair so that I can get on track to healthier hair.
