Interesting compilation, about an equal number of misses as hits, but well worth having
I'm a very big Beatles fan and also of the psychedelic genre, so this compilation really appealed to me. I'd heard a few of them before, such as Yes' Every Little Thing, The Hollies' If I Needed Someone and Spooky Tooth's I Am The Walrus, but the vast majority of these were a completely new listening experience for me and I ended up really enjoying around half of it and thinking that the rest of it was OK (apart from one track I really didn't enjoy by Lol Coxhill (I Am The Walrus). I noticed that there was no track listing on Amazon at the moment, so thought it would be useful for potential buyers to know what was on it.Disc One: 1. CAMEL - Mystery Tour 2. DEEP PURPLE - Help 3. Tragical history tour
Well, "tragical" is overstating things, but this is a disappointing set.I'm a big fan of Grapefruit/Cherry Red's ongoing expeditions into the abandoned attics of British musical history, as their trawls through the dust and cobwebs normally yield rich rewards in terms of both musical quality and historical interest. The premiss for this one - Beatles covers from the psychedelic/early prog era, by artists mostly working in the sort-of-underground scene - is intriguing but while it delivers strongly on the historical axis, as a listen, for the most part it's a bit of a drag. There are two main reasons for this. First up, a lot of the tracks are pretty much straight covers of the originals and add nothing to them (the weird exception being the most famous item here, Cliff Bennett's "Got To Get You Into My Life", which is almost identical to the original but somehow better). They, however, are less annoying than the pompous reconstructions in the style of Vanilla Fudge which form the other dominant theme. These tracks give the impression that the bands involved think they're "improving" on the originals, as though they feel they're superior to the source material. They're not. How you feel about these tracks will probably depend on how you feel about Joe Cocker's "With A Little Help From My Friends" (not present, due to licensing issues, but a perfect case in point). If you think it's an amazing transformation of a throwaway ditty, you may well like a lot of the music here. If like me you think it's a wretched farrago of self-important melodrama that entirely misses the point of a wry, charming and brilliantly constructed pop record, and an extremely early example of the kind of meaningless rock bluster that made punk rock so necessary, you'll be underwhelmed by much of this set. It's not all bad. I mainly liked the instrumentals, such as Big Jim Sullivan's kitsch but engaging sitar re-interpretations and Hardin-York's "Northern Medley" (an organ-drum duet which takes on "Lady Madonna" and "Norwegian Wood" in a way which makes you think it might be Graham Bond and Ginger Baker jamming while they wait for Jack Bruce to turn up). But I usually find about a third of the tracks on a Grapefruit box set really float my boat, and the rest are amiable if less memorable. Here, I liked about 3 tracks per disc and found most of the rest boring or annoying. At one point I found myself agonising over how much longer I had to put up with it all, and when I checked I found I was still less than halfway through disc one.As usual with these boxes, the cast of contributors is a mix of big names, reliable second-stringers and the kind of cult figures most folk have never heard of but hardcore collectors consider over-familiar. It's the only box set I can think of which features both Deep Purple and Vera Lynn on the same disc. Those of you upset by Cherry Red's recent transition from clamshells to slipcases for their triple-CD packages are advised that this policy seems like it's here to stay. Let's hope what goes into future slipcases is more exciting than what we have here.Three stars anyway, because the glimpse into a long-gone era is fascinating. And I very much liked Andy Morten's design and artwork which totally captures the look of the era and its utopian optimism. It made me feel like I was six again and that's very, very welcome.

Great compilation
I’m at a loss to understand the negative reviews. I used to be really snooty about Beatles cover versions when I was first getting into them but now I embrace them, and this is an excellent compilation. There are some fantastic interpretations of the Beatles psychedelic stuff. Some really good prog rock/hard rock covers, curiosities, light hearted stuff and everything in between. Including the amazing version of “in my life” by the wonderful kippington lodge. I enjoyed at least 85/90 percent of it all. Plus the informative booklet. For less than 20 quid. My advice....buy it!

Excellent compilation
Of course the original is the best but this is well worth buying as there are many good covers here and very few not so good. I doubt that I will play Lol Chill's version of I am the Walrus again !!Recommended to all

Lots to enjoy. Some of the tracks are better than the original ones, some are just weird.
