The horror of what happened in Sudan is documented history,  so ugly and real that the only way it can be told effectively is with a great story. But understand, I did NOT make up the atrocities in this book. Every awful thing that happens to my characters--the insect treatment, couples tied together and fed to crocodiles, rape, mass murder, slave trading--actually happened to a real, live person somewhere in Sudan.
