It relies on spring-tension to hold it open rather than a mechanical lock. That's the same spring-tension that opens it quickly when pressing the button to unlock it. Works well though and it's never tried to close on me, even when walking directly into strong winds. Biggest issue with it is the awkwardly shaped grip.

How do i fix it if the cords become loose and it doesn't fully open or close?

Hi, If you see the mechanism cords it could well be broken. This normally happens when someone opens or closes the umbrella without pressing the button. This is an automatic opening and closing umbrella so the button should be pressed to open the umbrella and to close the canopy.
