Smaller than other TCM books.
Love this book! A great selection of movies were featured, but I thought it was odd that Psycho wasn’t included. Especially since it was referenced multiple times throughout the book. The quality of the book was great, but it is smaller than other TCM books that I own. Overall, would definitely recommend.

An excellent book exploring classics of the horror genre
Turner Classic Movies is the television channel that presents movies from almost te full spectrum of the history of cinema from the silent movie era through the Golden Era of Hollywood to the modern era (the 60’s and beyond). The Turner Classic Movies organization also supports the publication of genre-specific books on subjects from throughout the history of cinema. The book under review is one by David J. Skal entitled Fright Favorites: 31 Movies to Haunt your Halloween and Beyond. The book includes presentations of 31 movies from the period of 1922 to 2017 (or 62 if one includes the films included for additional viewing at the end of each chapter). The number of films included from each of the decades from the 1920’s to the 2010’s are as follows: 1920’s—2; 1930’s—5; 1940’s—2; 1950’s—6; 1960’s—6; 1970’s—3; 1980’s—4; 1990’s—2; 2010’s—1. From my perspective, the most memorable of these 31 films are the following: Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror (1922); Dracula (1931); Frankenstein (1931); Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931); The Wolf Man (1941); Cat People (1942); Them (1954); Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954); Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956); The Birds (1963); Rosemary’s Baby (1968); The Exorcist (1973); and Young Frankenstein (1974). I highly recommend this book for any cinephile worthy of the name.

A nice savory selection of horror and monsters!
A nice and savory selection of horror and monster movies that will re-ignite the passion for viewing these classics. Also the size, fine printing and quality paper entices one to flip through while sitting with cocktail at coffee table or sidebar.

Another scary surprise!
Always looking for good, illustrated books on film genres to use in my classes for Lifelong Learners. This one features 31 films not to be missed in the horror genre. A film nut will recognize all of them, nicely summarized and including pictures and back-stories. Bravo!

A Halloween Sampler
This is a good looking book, filled with lots of gorgeous pics, interesting analysis, fun anecdotes, and solid history. The essays offer about the same amount of background and info about each film as you'll find in TCM's The Essentials, but they are more grounded in interesting cultural history (much of it no doubt condensed from Skal's other works). I wish it had included more films (Bride of Frankenstein, The Uninvited, The Blob, and The Changeling are glaringly missing), but as a Halloween sampler, this is a solid dose of spooky fun.
