Q: WHat is the diameter of the base?

I don't have the thing with me right now, but if I had to estimate, I'd say 8 or 9 inches in diameter. The real question is, what is the diameter of the giant wet spot this will leave all over your floor. That's right. This thing doesn't propel the mist up in the air much at all. There's no fan on it. The mist basically comes out and pours straight down only to condense all over the machine anything below. So don't put this on wood or carpet or anything that shouldn't get wet. And definitely don't put this in an area of your house that is a little chilly. Here's a tip. Buy a different one. See my review for more details. Here's one quote from it: "Who designed this thing? What were they thinking? After they sold a bunch of units, they probably stuffed piles of cash into a briefcase and caught a red-eye out of the country."

Q: Easy to clean the tank?

We clean the base about every 3 tank fills. It has been easy to clean. We only use distiller water to run the unit. We only rinse the thank.

Q: Does this unit have an aroma tray?

Yes. Ours broke and we returned it.

Q: Is there a handle at the top to install when full? I purchased the 509 model and the handle was at the bottom and cumbersome to put in base,

There isn't a "handle" at the top, but YES - there is a ledge at the (top) back of the humidifier. You can use that to flip it over and guide it into place. and I suggest that you do because the directions specifically say not to use the handle that is at the bottom (the one that is eventually submerged) because it may not be strong enough to hold the entire weight of the reservoir.
