How to Solve It: A New Aspect of Mathematical Method

Polya’s book generates one definite regret. Why didn’t I come across it earlier? I envy all those who are reading it first time.The method is simple but the number of questions you ask at each stage of the method makes thee solution very rich and the understanding of the problem very deep. The ultimate test of maths is “ By how many methods can you solve a problem and which of them is the most efficient?”You will enjoy every word the master has written.

Because explaining the principles is not always enough. Although this book is not the final word in the field of teaching and does not replace other similar books, this is the only book of its kind authored by a mathematical genius. This book won't turn anyone into next Polya, but it gives teachers something to work on. Of course, one needs to study the theory of problem solving from a biological perspective as well.

Its an eye opener in terms of understanding the crux of problem solving.If you have a mathematical acumen then this book would seduce you the very instant that you start reading the novel proofs shared.Even for me who had a slight mathematical distaste, the book was entertaining but i feel solving such problems will make one a better problem solver in general.So go ahead and buy this book only if you are passionate about applying problem solving skills in your area of problem domain. V nice.. good for developing mathematical instincts in students.. although written for what a teachers perspective should be while teaching but a good read for students as well.

If you are into maths and science then this is your book... I have been reading this book and it is very interesting..

It gives new way of thinking called "out of the box" thinking. I am not a teacher but I think every mathematics teacher should read it.

This book teaches you to dissociate yourself from the problem posed and ask yourself logical questions to decompose the problem before forming a plan.

I bought this because I was looking for algorithmic examples for teaching and learning. This sounded like it would be a good book, so I borrowed it from the University Library. After extending my borrowing period twice, I decided I absolutely need to buy this book.There are so many brilliant things to be learned from this book. Here is one: The algorithm of solving any problem in mathematics is the same as solving any problem in general. It will take a year I think for my step-son to learn those steps, but let's be clear on this. In the problem of reassembling his computer/study desk involved the same steps. He is beginning to see that Mathematics is just problem solving - there is a common set of steps to go through for any problem.I wish I read this book when I first started teaching physics. It would have added to my pedagogical tactics, and helped a lot of people. Being retired for almost ten years though, I am a little disappointed by not having read it.Don't make my mistake - get the book!! Use the book!! Tell others about the book!!
