Fabiano Caruana: His Amazing Story and His Most Instructive Chess Games

Kalinin has offered a nice selection of games that start to paint a picture of Fabiano the chess player. More books like this should be written. At world #2 and consistently 2800+, nearly every game Fabiano plays is of the highest quality and instructional value. So we need more biographies/games collections. The reason I gave it a 4 instead of 5 is because I think it could have gone further to explain and decode some of the instructive moves and decisions that Fabiano makes in certain games. His heavy piece endgame against Eljanov from the 2016 Olympiad, for instance, is a case in point. I could imagine pages filled with insights about that endgame (both text and variations), but Kalinin's analysis is briefer than I'd have liked, and left me with some questions. Of course, an author has to make decisions and judgment calls; he cannot explain everything to everyone. So this is somewhat subjective on my part. Still, I'm enjoying the book, and if you're a Fabi fan, or just want to get familiar with some of the highest quality modern chess, it's a recommended book.

A fabulous overview of the most recent challenger for the World Chess Championship. Recommended — well written. Caruana tied Magnus Carlsen in the standard time format, but lost to him in the quicker tie breakers.

The annotations in this book are horrible. He likes to show you some ideas as to how opening theory developed related to the game but nothing else. Hardly any good annotations for most of the game.Having said that, I can't say enough good things about Fabiano's games themselves. If you want to look at some games of Fabiano's this is a good book but in my opinion this is a terrible book for chess improvement.

Für mich als fortgeschrittenen Beginner war dieses Buch sher hilfreich! Gute Notation und viele Diagramme machen es leicht dem Parteiverlauf zu folgen. Besonders hervorheben möchte ich die zahlreichen Informationen zu Konzepten die hinter den Zügen stehen. Für mich sehr hilfreich, klare Kaufempfehlung.
