Helpful for a first timer
So many books, so I took a well respected practitioner suggestion. This was a good and useful first introduction to doing Gua Sha on yourself without doing it blindly.

My personal experience with this, combined with other ---- Gua Sha: A Complete Self-treatment Guide ...
When I looked for information -- could not find much, concerning this, et al. I felt since "Western" medicine seems to have "developed" their **new method "ASTYM", **et al., etc. -- I figured it was worth a look. --- Mostly got, come-here-pay-here info. So, purchased this book as lone info of "how" to or at least about it. And, I kept looking, reading other. Like acupressure, acupuncture, etc.it focuses on addressing tension, "swelling" in affected areas. Yet, due to it's approach, seems could address post op swelling that may show up days later, post op. It's written, this book, ---- more like a personal story than I'd like and not a "how-to"... however, if one has any capability to engage this on their own, --this may work for them too. If not, skip it IMO. It, this book, ---- for me, somewhat tells you how/why, without actually telling you how-why... ---- I presume there are many reasons for this. To guess at that, well, anyone can do that. But, it is, what it is, such as it is... and toward to second half shows "mappings" of areas. The Chart's for all of these types compliment each other. So, if one got a good illustrated Anatomy book with e.g. Acupressure/Acupuncture "points" and followed "common sense" (?) of **self **help homeopathic endeavors, --this was helpful and glad I got it. For, me, the NON-benevolent Western Medicine world capitalizing on this at, e.g. ~$150 per hour is amazing, yet I guess typical. And for "ME", this, combined with other, in my post-op recovery had immediate and drastically-good, significantly-notable beneficial results. I am "sure", had I asked or mentioned this I would have been laughed at, or told some other "negative". Or, they'd gladly taken my Cash, to do it in their "new" Division for ASTYM, latest and greatest in PT recovery, --genius's as they are? (geese). I saw tremendous swelling reduce in days, starting next day, and did not experience the "Scar tissue" build up, as I did the last time, same operation, other side of the body. It was combined with ***other homeopathic focus on post op recovery along with a ***lot of extensive due diligence on my part with the *Physical, movement, exercise aspect and done on a strict daily schedule (pain, meds, move on a 24/7, 4hr cycle for more than a month. Yet, it all, could not have worked for me, too! But, this time, it did and had nothing to loose to give it a cautious, diligent, informed try. I found, I, again, really needed to "help" myself among all these Elite?, Doctors, all specialists and all with many "assistants", techs, PA's.... none of which, any **one, was "my" single Project Manager... for me. So, -- I --, did it myself this time again. If you have a family member that is "up to speed", your are fortunate, --all I had was me, but with, then, help. We are all "One-offs" with this stuff, Western Meds result or otherwise, this, etc. So, aside from the PT I had, and had to develop myself as well, I engaged this on my own (could not afford their ASTYM Clinic --sad, no benevolence at all $$). This, "gua sha", combined well with stopping the Icing of the extensive swelling --5 days post op, appeared counter intuitive since seemed to me to be reducing the Blood/Fluid flow, and facilitating **Accumulation there and actually cooling, coagulating it more??? (Who could I ask--the Doctor? --eh, no.) Yes, icing makes pain numbed, but I needed to feel some pain to "know" benefit. So, this combined well with Hot Epsom Salt hot packs (thick soaked, microwaved towel wraps), on elevated area in a cyclical endeavor, and reducing or keeping to a minimum the opioids worked for me in this instance, --thankfully. So, "they" prescribed, - "Move" (PT), - Elevate, -Medicate (pain management), and - Cold Packs... ---- I added this, Gua Sha, and migrated to Hot Packs ---- And, on a 4 hour cycle (since the Pain Meds timing anyway...) (pain, meds, moved -- then this, then elevated, hot Epsom Salt packs, or as seemed to make sense for me in that moment ad hoc. So, yes I had 12-Midnight work outs, as well as 2am or 4am then back at it 7am -- the 4 hour sleep blocks of time, worked and was what I had, --**anyway. ---- Careful, specific *Stretching (which hurts as much the next day as "workouts"/PT) My understanding of the Sales Pitch at the ASTYM Hospital Clinic... was how Scar Tissue is ***Formed and FIXED, TREATED... -- (forms immediately, and our body starts to heal, the moment we are CUT... it does not wait 4- 8 weeks, correct?!?!.... get started, asap, period IMO and personal experience at some level. Discuss Pre-op as well as you can, "if" you can... sadly, may be ignored, or dismissed.) Overnight, I saw *significant good result, (using "common sense"... as I saw it applied for "me"), and sustained it, and now 8 weeks later, back off, eliminate, etc. (And, other stuff, the Dr. laughed at, ----it cleared up too, since post op.... I guess those "Channels" of good blood flow are real... ----why have a ASTYM Division in a Hospital if not? Also, I attribute the Surgery too, to fixing the other too... I was told was purely coincidental. But, when you look at the Mappings, well, I don't think it was coincidental. To bad they don't track "other" stuff clearing up too.

For anyone interested in learing about Gua Sha massage, this is a very good English language guide. The author describes its history in oriental medicine - many centuries old - and guides the reader through using it on themselves and others.Although it may seem very simple as a technique, the results are very effective. Sometimes the simpler things are the best! A highly recommended read. We bought a couple of copies for our own use and then one as a gift.
