Surrealism Review: Caws knows her stuff - ...i am an autodidact when it comes to literature and art...because of a certain turn of events, i became interested in Dadaism & Surrealism...as a retired academic & researcher, i highly recommend this book as an authoritative, insightful, accessible, not elitist or patronizing overview of Surrealism...in addition, Caws is a terrific writer...if there were not so much to ingest and to ruminate about, i would not be able to put the book down--i have been making notes in the text as well as taking notes & recording ideas in a notebook...a great resource for beginners, students, professionals, & the general readership... Review: The Exquisite Corpse Wears Atlers in its Eyes - This is quite a good book on Surrealism. Mary Ann Caws commentary is very insightful and there are lots of great pictures. I've been studying Surrealism for a long time and I learned about some artists that I'd never heard of before in this book. For instance Eileen Agar, Brassai, Esteban Frances, Wilhelm Freddie and Pierre Molinier, to name a few. All the usual suspects are here as well: Dali, Magritte, Miro, Delvaux, Masson, Ernst, De Chirico, Bellmer and so on. One thing I like about this book is that it includes a lot of examples of Surrealist paintings, photographs, collages and objects that are not typically included in books on Surrealism. Caws is kind of an authority and she has put together a very fine book.

Unfortunately this does not contain the documents section which mirrors the format of the 6 sections on surrealist art work. Quite disappointing because you really have to look at the item description on Amazon to notice this. The documents section contains translations of key surrealist texts, poetry etc. I will be sending it back and buying the hardcopy.
