A great starting place.
An excellent compilation of essays on the genre, but the piece of this book that really shines are the detailed examinations of recurring themes and their manifestations across a long history of works. The bibliographies at the end of each chapter provide recommendations for further reading material. I will certainly be referencing this text in the future.

One of the best introductory books out there
This is an absolute must for anyone who wishes to study Gothic literature. It may be used as a solid, reliable starting point, and also as a great resource later on. Thumbs up to a superb book!

Excellent overview of all things gothic
The perfect book for anyone looking for a crash course in Gothic studies, with thoughtful, interesting summaries and several in-depth studies of canonical texts. Punter and Byron are well known authorities in the field; their clear, concise, humorous style makes reading this book a pleasure.

Essential But Slightly Flawed.
Most of the material in the book isn’t new but the structure in which it is written makes it essential. I was a bit disappointed by the way Toni Morrison was only marginally mentioned and not given her own entry for the chapter titled “Writers of Gothic”. I am very suspicious as to this oversight.

The Gothic
Puntner and Byron's "The Gothic" offers an introductory survey for 'advanced undergraduates and postgraduates.' What might not be clear, if you don't study the contents before purchase, is that each entry is brief, as are the essays on context and themes. Being that so much of the book consists of thumbnail sketches of elements of the Gothic, the dedicated reader should look elsewhere.

Missed Opportunity
The subject should have been a fascinating one to explore. It's just a shame the book is simply not very good.
