If you want more of the Ann(e)s, look no further!
I love this take on the Ann(e)s story and really appreciate some of the more fleshed out (no pun intended) parts of their life together. I also think the more modern language, that others have decried in their reviews of this book, is not really a blight on this great story. If I want to read Anne's diary and get my fix of Georgian era English, I'll do so and gladly, but this gives me a chance to "hear" Ann Walker's voice as well, without getting taken out of the story by pondering how different language is in our modern world, etc.Don't get me wrong, I'd read it regardless of which style of English was used, but don't let that sway you into passing this over if you're an Anne Lister or Gentleman Jack fan. It's not as if it's written in "Valley Girl" or TOWIE style language. Gosh! Thanks for writing this! :-)

Disappointing - there are better books on Anne Lister
As a fan of HBO’s Gentleman Jack and various books about Anne Lister, I wanted to like this book, but found much of it dry and boring. Anne and Ann’s sections sounded the same - the author did not give them distinctive voices. Perhaps a more informal style might have worked for Ann. Even if Lister’s diaries are mostly dry catalogues of events, a novel should offer more opportunity to take stylistic liberties. There were inexplicable lapses, like when Ann observes Anne’s former lovers at Mr. Lister’s funeral, but apparently feels nothing worth noting - no jealousy, curiosity, no reaction whatsoever.I also found the language an awkward mix of implausible modern phrasing and stilted, inconsistent historical usage. There were moments of interest as Anne mused on the injustice of women denied their rights and same-sex relationships unfairly prohibited. The frustrating secrecy the women had to live with was relatable.

Interesting and enjoyable
This novel, based on Anne Lister's life and her relationship with Ann Walker, is an interesting and enjoyable read. I have not read/transcribed all of AL's journals yet I found this book well-grounded in their relationship. Because most of what we know about AW is based on AL's journals, the author took what is available and made the plot plausible. We won't know their actual conversations but the spirit of their interactions and their individuality is apparent. The back and forth between their individual thoughts presented a different way to portray the protagonists. I enjoyed the book.

Interesting read from a different angle
For Anne Lister/Ann Walker fans, this is a good read, a fictionalized account of their romance in a more modern language. Interestingly, the author is directly associated with Shibden Hall and the Calderdale museums.

Fictional account but worth reading.
Great writing as a companion book to all the historical accounts of Anne Lister and Ann Walker. It is a fictional account but allows us to see into the timeline of historical accounts.

An enlightening fiction.
A fictional account of Anne Lister's life courting and living with Anne Walker. Told from both perspectives of the characters. Well done. Quick and easy to read.

Interesting concept
I've read quite a bit about Anne Lister so it was interesting to read also from what may have been Ann Walker's side if the story. I mostly enjoyed it but some of the language the author uses made me cringe a bit and pulled me out of the narrative, as I couldn't imagine the characters using those words.I don't know if I'd recommend it personally. It possibly depends on how much of a purist you are!

Interesting but sad
A somewhat fictionalized overview of the relationship between Anne Lister and Ann Walker. The women take turns recounting key points of their lives together. Well-written but definitely reveals the truth behind a somewhat mismatched pairing. If you love the series Gentleman Jack, this much more realistic account may not be to your liking.
