Comprehensive, multi-aspect overview
We're planning on buying our first yacht this year, and although I'd narrowed down the field to a handful of designs and features, it was useful to take on-board some of the alternatives presented in Duncan's excellent book and consider other options. The sections on the actual purchasing process and required/desirable paperwork were very useful, and I'm sure I'll be referring back to this book frequently before, during and after we finally take the plunge!

covers a lot, but probably not what you want specifically in sufficient depth
Nothing wrong with the book but I think it is over rated. It makes you think about a lot of things, but if you know roughly what you want then it doesn't go into enough depth specifically around the options. I would buy it again, so gave it 4 star rather than 3.

Excellent and Informative Read
I purchased the book in error as I was looking for a book on buying a motor boat (yes I know it has "Yacht" in capitals on the cover), but was pleased to find that the same principles apply to buying a motor boat as a yacht. (They both have grp hulls and engines!) It was very informative, very readable, and whilst the finer points of tuning the sail were lost on me it was also entertaining. Highly recommended as a good read, and invaluable advice pre-purchase.

A bit basic
Not bad but it must be tricky to know how to write a book for an audience that varies from total novice to experienced and ready to buy. I found it a bit basic but there is some good material in there.

Excellent
Don't buy a boat before you have read this great book, a step by step, subject by subject guide to what you need to know and look for when buying a boat

A New Journey
For anyone about to set out on the journey of getting afloat in a sailboat then this book is a must. For one it has been written by a sailing journalist(Duncan Kent)who has probably sailed more boats than most over the last 30-40 years.Secondly, he talks about absolutely every aspect of boat buying right from the start, from the point where you might not even know what type of boat would be most suited to your needs. By the time you have finished this book you will have a good understanding of every aspect of sail boats which will enable you to make a much more considered judgment when it comes to buying your own.As most people will admit, with sailing you never stop learning but this book is sure as hell a very good place to start.

CHOOSING AND BUYING A YACHT
A concise and very well written book. This definitely helped me make my mind up about the purchase of a yacht.
