Scorcese but....
You can't go wrong when picking a Martin Scorcese film to watch. He always has a vision, can tell a stgory and get the best from his cast. This is not by any measure my favourite Scorcese film. To be honest I think he had it in his mind to make an epic film of an epic story and therefore this film suffered from a preference to style over content. It is filmed on a large scale. There are thousands of extras, massive sets and Scorcese directs to get a style running throughout the film. Unfortunate with all this attention to both grandeur and detail he losses something in the characterisation and interaction between characters. The tension between the main protagonists, the love hate relationships and the love interest doesn't quyite carry over to full effect. This is nothing to do with the fine performances but just that the individual dramas don't quite carry across the great sweep of the film. There again I'm not a epric film sort of person so my preference for seeing Scorcese film say De Niro and Foster in a café or De Biro and Pesci in an small apartment and watching them interact is purely personal.

An entertaining, very well-made film.
Being the "Victor Meldrew" that I am, I always read the worst reviews first, and this film has a lot on this site, mainly by people who didn't like the violence. I'm not too keen on graphic violence either, but in this film it probably has a purpose. Martin Scorsese is a serious, non-exploitive, film maker, so I'm guessing he might have been commenting on the "romancing" of violence by some people.1. There are parallels in this film to the "Troubles" in Northern Ireland betwen the Catholic "Irish", and the Protestant supporters of the union within the United Kingdom. The Irish rebels are often romanticised by foreigners of Irish extraction, who fund rebel groups. The brutality of the violence in this film demonstrates that there is no romance to fighting.2. Similarily, gang violence in modern America is also romanticised, and glorified by gangsta rappers. It is made to sound attractive. As this film demonstrates, there is nothing attractive about gang violence.I found the film very well-made and good looking. It could have been a Ridley Scott film, and I mean that as a compliment. There were some good performances, especially Daniel Day-Lewis and Cara somebody, who played Hell Cat Maggie, who made Sarah Palin seem like a teddy bear. In addition, Cameron Diaz was far more attractive in this film than she is wiggling her bum in films like she normally does, and her acting was the best I've seen her do.

Great movie, terrible transfer!!!
Love this movie. The Decaprio and Daniel DayLewis are outstanding as usual.Beautifully directed and impeccably edited. However, this transfer from film is horrendous!! It has a distorted line at the edge where it hasn’t been cropped properly. But as an HD movie, it looked like DVD quality, soft as old boots.

Blu Ray Reviews
In terms of the blu-ray quality a word of advice - the UK version is meant to be terrible (I haven't seen it but enough people say it's an awful transfer so I'm happy to go along with the consensus). There are currently 3 versions doing the rounds from America/Canada. For the best blu-ray transfer, you need to pick up the one that has the gold banner at the top and bottom of the cover. This is the 2010 re-mastered version with HD sound as opposed to the earlier 5.1 mix. Picture quality is far better, although not perfect, and the DNR issue seems to have been resolved. A word of warning though; there are some sellers that are selling the Candian copy under the banner of the 2010 remastered version. This is a 2009 version, not the superior 2010 version. The 2010 blu-ray is region-free and a pretty good price as well. Just be aware it may take a couple of weeks to land of your doormat.
