M3 Infantry Half-Track 1940–73 (New Vanguard, 11)

A look at the US Army's APC of WWII.
This Osprey New Vanguard #11 book entitled "M3 Infantry Half-Track 1940-1973" covers a lot more than just the APC version of the American half-track.This volume covers the M2 and M3 half-tracks as well as the many specialized versions such as tank destroyers, anti-aircraft GMC's and prime movers. The book is fairly comprehensive in it's scope. It does a decent job of explaining the doctrine and employment of US armored infantry before and during WWII which prompted the development of an armored infantry carrier. There are very good evaluations of the vehicles in combat and a short comparison between the US half-tracks and the German Sdkfz 251 half-track (the german vehicle had slightly better armor protection but the US half-track had better overall performance with a powered front axle and far better reliability having been designed to make use of well-proven commercial components). Also covered are the various manufacturers that produced M2s and M3s, including production numbers. It covers the half-tracks given as part of "Lend-Lease" including the thousands in Soviet service - something I was unaware of. It also looks at post-war service with the French, Latin American armies and also the Israelis where it would serve into the 1970's.This is a very good Osprey title which have always been known for their excellent color artwork and photos/illustrations. The author covered a lot of ground in a very small package and did a very good job, considering its length. For those wanting a short primer on US half-tracks, this is an excellent and interesting read. I recommend this with five stars.

very nice
but I would have enjoyed fewer external pix and more of the interior (controls, dials/gauges, accommodations, etc.)

Just OK
Pretty thin book. Had hoped for better pictures.

Great Reference for the WWII Reader
I have about 50 of these Osprey books on everything from WWII tech to tactics to battles, and they never disappoint. Great addition to your library.

Informative and concise.
Mr. Zaloga does another great job. I used to own a White halftrack and this book brought back memories. The subject matter is covered well in a small book and will satisfy most readers. It is especially strong on the many variations of the halftrack.

Great book. It is not easy to find out much history about this halftrack, but this book fills in the gaps. A great tool for historians modelers like me.
