Yes the reflectors do work effectively, and should be handled with care. You can see functional applications from solar ovens to solar stirling engines.

Dear Marilyn. I am not sure where you are shopping at. It looks like Scientifics direct. I have a 12 in @ $41.95, They also have 18 in $59.95 24 in $ 84.95. They are made of metal & have an opening about the size of your thumb in the center.They are of good optical quality. There are also many other companies selling this product. May i suggest, Green power science. (you tube). Buy a huge Fresnel lens. They sell SUPERIOR optical parabolic mirrors made of acrylic 6 in $37. 13 in $69. 17 in $79(mine) 26 in $129. 29 in $179. 35 in $279. 46 in $429. & larger.Sorry i got carried away. What is the height of this reflector?

The diameter of the dish is 23 & 1/2 inch. The depth is 6 inches. I bought more than one size so I don't know if this is the one you are asking about.

I'd like to plant veggies in a not-too-sunny, glassed in, bright, fluorescent-lighted room with skylights. Can this be aimed at the "garden"?

No. The parabolic dish is used to focus the light to a point from 3 to 5 inches above the bottom of the dish. I can't see it working for what you are talking about. I guess if it was set up in such a way it would let the light continue past the focal point and then defuse into the room so it might provide additional light but a mirror put in the same spot would reflect additional light into the room.
