Impressed
I bought this because I needed a home device to store our documents, music, movies, and photos. I wanted it to be fail-safe.Well, it has been 5 years since my purchase. I stuck two old 2TB drives in here, along with two new 2TB drives. I used the proprietary SHR configuration. This gave me a system where 1 drive could fail and not lose data. It also gave me 5.4 TB of storage, so the 3/4 of the space purchased.Well, yesterday a drive failed. The interface was easy enough to remove the drive. I ordered two new 4TB drives. Today, while the device was still running, I pulled the failed drive and replaced it with on of the larger 4TB drives. Configured the new drive for the storage pool and BAM, all good. Very impressive. No downtime and no lost data.Next, I will take a 2nd drive out and replace it with the other new 4TB drive. This will up my storage about 3TB more with the same redundancy. This has been one of the most reliable and best tech purchases I've made in the last decade.

Complex, lots of features, but worth the money so far.
I've had this for 4 days so far, and so far it seems pretty awesome. First of all, I got it as a warehouse deal, so it came repackaged in a cardboard box, but everything was there. The two chassis screws did not seem to fit well in the rear, but I got them in. At this point, I'm simply operating with an old 250GB drive I had laying around. Eventually I plan on a 3 or 4 TB, so I'm hoping I'll be able to easily clone this drive to the new so that I don't have a bunch of config work to re-do. Anyway, the DSM software is pretty complex and overwhelming at first. Thankfully, there are a ton of videos online explaining how it works. I got confused between the QuickConnect ID and the user accounts, but I eventually figured it out. The fact that I can set my phone to automatically back up photos to this is awesome. I take a picture and a few seconds later the picture is on the NAS drive. The software is little quirky on Android, but it does work. Same for Android audio station and File Station...they work good but have simple no frills interfaces. I uploaded about 120GB of photos and the CPU has been running at 80 to 90% for about 24 hours so far due to the thumbnail process, but even with that the response time on the drive is great. I don't notice any lag at all. I also have a USB 3.0 drive plugged into the back and it shows up as just another folder. The only bad thing is that you can't use that USB drive to store your photos or music. You have to store them on the NAS drive or else the Photo Station and Audio Apps can not see them. I'll post an update once I have more experience with Surveillance Station.

Amen - I now have a reliable NAS - I should have bought this years ago.
This is my first actual NAS device. I had built a win7 pc to serve as a home NAS years ago, but got tired of trying to keep up with OS updates, etc. and experienced several crashes a year - sometimes a reboot fixed things, but many times it required me to remember how to restore all the various user permissions I had set up previously. It became too much work. I decided to simplify things by just going with a purpose built home NAS. This device also takes up 1/3 the space, uses a lot less power, and is virtually silent.I am using this to hold and stream home movie files, photos, and music to several home pc's as well as several Western Digitial media players (WDTV Live PLus and, WDTV Live Hubs) over my home gigabit network. Connecting to the old home built NAS from my media players sometimes required a reboot of the NAS for no apparent reason. With this Synology NAS, those issues are gone along with all the other headaches I had with the win7 built NAS.I installed 4 WD Red 4TB drives in this and fired it up. I was prompted for a firmware update once connected to the internet, did so, and was done in a matter of about 5 minutes. Then the OS loads onto the drives, I initialized my 4 volumes/drives as "basic" volumes (I am not using raid - I wanted 4 seperate drives to appear on my network to suit my organizational needs and already have another device (4 bay ProBox) holding backups of everything. The default admin account (which I renamed and set new password for) already had the desired user privilages for my ability to read/write/copy/delete etc. files on the NAS. I then simply created another "user" account via the web interface with unique name and password for all the other devices to log into the NAS through, and limited those permissions to "read only", so no worries about others accidentally deleting stuff.I transfer data to/from the NAS at nearly gigabit speeds (average around 100 MB/s write and 115MB/s read). The NAS and WD Red drives, by the way, keep up just fine. That was a big conern of mine and why I chose this NAS with a faster processor and more RAM over less expensive models. I can stream 1080p movies to multiple media players silmutaneously without issue - no buffering, no lags. The temps (according to NAS interface) have never gone above 90F with the fan set (user configurable) at its lowest setting, and they were only that high while the drives were busy writing the 8TB of data I sent to them from the backup source.I had considered Qnap devices as well, but it came down to reviews for this NAS being more favorable for my purposes than the Qnap. No regrets whatsoever so far, other than i could kick myself for not buying this years ago.

Good bit of kit but not for the faint hearted.
Good bit of kit but requires a knowledgeable person to set it up to enable full use of the features. This really is a technical bit of kit that works well but setting all the network connections up requires an IT persons assistance as it is an absolute minefield. Just download the users manual to see that it requires someone well versed in the jargon to enable the features it offers to be enabled. It must be possible to write a set of instructions in plain English that will allow a much simpler installation.
