An exotic decorating idea on a low budget
If you have not owned Shoji screens or lanterns made of rice paper you are in for a surprise. While delicate looking, rice paper is extremely tough and long lasting. I have been buying so-called “oriental lanterns” for many years and not once has one torn, yellowed or rotted. They are an acquired taste, to some the look is like a cheap throwaway, and to others the look is one of peace and tranquility. If you are considering any rice paper lantern you have to start off accepting that each item will have its own unique handmade look to it, no two will ever be identical. There isn’t much to them, just a wood or wire frame with the rice paper stretched over it, and the electrical socket. This model uses a wire frame that is completely hidden by the paper. Rice paper lanterns generally glow close to pure white when used with a bright light bulb and tend to emit a soft yellowish glow when the bulb wattage goes down. But even at low wattage they transmit light to the surrounding room softly and evenly.I bought a pair of these to place in my home office for when I work late at night. I have gone through dozens of desk lamps and have not found one yet that isn’t too harsh on the eyes for late night use when I am using the computer. I chose these because I have a gigantic antique bas-relief Japanese wall mural on the wall next to my workstation and I now have two of these lanterns mounted flanking the mural on either side. The soft glow provides a stunning effect for the bas-relief and throws off just enough light to work comfortably by. I bought an excellent dimmer Leviton TBL03-10E 300-watt Tabletop Slide Control Lamp Dimmer, Black at a great price to adjust the amount of light to be just right. If you choose not to use a dimmer note that the lamps only have a cord-mounted on/off switch, but there are several different wattage bulbs that can be used. These are some of the lowest priced wall-mount lights sold anywhere but they don’t look it. In the right setting it looks like I paid an expensive interior decorator to create a first-class look.By the way, rice paper is safe if you’re concerned that they will go up in flames but it’s always wise to use reasonable caution and make sure the light bulb doesn’t get installed in such a way that it touches the sides of the lantern. The design of this lantern makes it impossible for the bulb to even come close.

Yes, like everyone else I would love to have a hardwired sconce on my wall, but I can not do electric. I don't mind the cord running down the wall. It comes in pieces and is easy peasy to put together. I hung it myself. Held up the the lamp where I wanted it. Then held up the metal plate using a level on it so the light would hang evenly. Drilled 2 holes. You have to pry open the 2 hooks on the metal plate for the lamp to hang on, but that's simple using a screwdriver. I have 3 in my family room and it's just right to watch TV. Bright enough to see, but dim enough to be relaxing.

Does the job
This light comes with a metal plate that is supposed to be attached with screws & wall anchors, but this is serious overkill. Once I got the paper shade more or less straight using the bracing wires, I put up two picture hangers (the kind with a little nail and a hook) and slid the top bar of the frame into the two hooks. Much easier and less damage to the walls, especially since this light probably weighs less than 8 ounces. As expected, the bulbs that come with it are equivalent to a nightlight in brightness, so if you want anything more you have to buy different bulbs. I ordered LED candelabra bulbs at 4W equivalent to 60W. The fixture says 40W max, so this should work fine (they aren't here yet).My only real complaint is that the shade just doesn't straighten out properly, making the lamp look crooked. I triple-checked with my level, which shows it to be fine, but it still looks askew because of the shade. If you want perfect angles, this might not be for you, but because I have a Yenny shop 52" Creative Floor Lamp Soft Lighting Home Design Minimalist Modern Floor Lamp with Fabric Shade (available on Amazon and fantastic) I wanted this to coordinate with that floor lamp, and it does go well with it.All in all, not a bad little light for the price, and the switch on the cord is high enough to get to without digging behind furniture and works quite well.

The shade is very good to cover a smoke alarm light.
I purchased this lamp for the shade only to cover a smoke alarm that has a bright green light. I have a terrible time sleeping with light and I had already covered the light with a small circle of duck tape just large enough for the light so that none of the smoke alarm openings were covered. There was still a halo of light all around the alarm. This shade is just the right height, width, and depth to cover that smoke alarm so for me it works well. I hung the shade on the wall using two nails with large heads so that the shade hung onto the metal bars at the back. Now I still have the lamp. Too bad I can't buy just another shade for it.

Just like the IKEA ones, except these have a cord.
Cheap, stylish, easy. You can have a wall sconce on demand, so long as there is an outlet nearby.NOTE that there is a heavy (somewhat clumsy) white electrical cord with toggle switch which hangs directly from the sconce to be plugged into a socket. The sconce does not attach to junction-box wires already within a wall. Makes a BIG difference as to how clean it looks on your wall. I'd say this is a great dorm room product, but not classy enough for your living room.....If, like me, you were looking for a substitute or replacement for the now-discontinued IKEA sconce which looks just like these, this Cord vs. No Cord is an important difference.....In my case, I damaged a shade from my IKEA rice paper sconces, and needed a replacement shade. This product is *slightly* different and bigger, but I could rig this shade onto my old IKEA mounting plate. Yes!!
