What is the difference between bdxl discs and m-discs ?

Ah, this is fairly straightforward:"BDXL" refers to the Blu-ray specification for quad layer, 100GB discs. In this case, M-Disc capable discs must be written by M-Disc capable writers, but instead of changing the color of the disc's dye, or changing its phase, these M-Discs and burners actually engrave the data into the disc in a series of pits and lands. Just bought a blu-ray m-disc drive. will the burned m-disc be readable by a standard dvd drive/player? thanks

I just burned several BDXL 100gb's. They are marked with Blu-Ray logo and open read etc fine with the same Blu-Ray drive I burned with. Regular dvd drive does not see the disc. I am going to try a Blu-Ray only external drive - will update.

Can someone recommend a drive that successfully burns the bdxl m-discs? my pioneer bdr-2209 is only successful about 2 out of 5 discs.

Yes. I've had excellent results on Mac OS X with the LG HL-DT-ST BD-RE WH14NS40. I bought mine in an external USB3 enclosure from OWC, but I'm quite sure that any you find here would work just as well. I've had a 100% success rate with the 25GB discs.
