Good children's film from the 70s.
As a middle aged adult I still enjoy this film as a simple adventure romp told from the perspective of a young boy. Though because I am older some of the magic has lost a bit of its gleam, but the story, performances and score still hold up, even if the hero is a bit one dimensional. The best part is that on bluray the film can now be seen in all its widescreen and color corrected glory. Even so the dated effects tend to draw the film back a notch or two, but if you can forgive them, then this film should entertain. Like a couple of others have mentioned I also caught this on HBO maybe in 1980 or 81, though I can't precisely remember. As a child I thought it was very entertaining, and even a few decades on I haven't lost any affection for this film, but am a bit more critical than I was as an uninformed youth. If you bought the DVD hoping for a good nostalgia blast, then I would recommend the bluray. It is far superior in presentation, but also accentuates some of the film's shortcomings.

CLASSIC MOVIE MAGIC
This movie rides the line of "so awful, it's good," and "so awfully good." By today's standards I would berate the movie for it's white-washing and occasional cultural insensitivity, but, when you get past that this movie is just a fun kid's adventure film that I never had available to me as a kid. Watching it now I can safely say it would have been something right up my alley; the young lead with a monkey companion, the storyline that contains numerous references to the Arabian Nights/Aladdin and his Magical Lamp stories, I would have watched the hell out of this on VHS. The special effects may be primitive by todays standards but that is what makes them so impressive. There is a audio commentary with the Director and he talks about how they utilized a lot of film techniques that were considered outdated even when this movie was made (the 1970s.) including paintings on panes of glass that were placed in front of the camera to give the illusion of depth and fantastical exteriors. Also quite a few swashbuckling set pieces. The movie is beautiful to watch with rich settings and spectacular editing. Oh, and Christopher Lee plays the bad guy -- always a plus. I recommend to those with an appreciation for old school fun.

Saw this movie on HBO when I was a kid and it's taken me forever to find it.

I remember seeing this little gem at the cinema many moons ago! It really captivated me. As did the very beautiful Emma Samms in her very first film role here. Oliver Tobias plays our hero with gusto and a swaying grace, and the always brilliant Christopher Lee as the Caliph Alquazar play the bad guy. Think of an Arabian Dracula and you're halfway there. Directed by Kevin Connor with style and panache. Have to also say how absolutely wonderful Ken Thorne's amazing music score is. Such an underrated gem, which sadly never got an official release, only on a Promo copy. The kids will love the film! Very family-orientated, no naughty bits! A wonderful blast from the past.
