Amazingly good for the price
Works great, sole is flat (as per my straightedge), handles could be better. Pleasant surprise: reviews led me to expect an OK product, good for rough planing, but not up to fine work without significant filing. Perhaps I was lucky ;-) Adjustment with the double screws is easy and very stable. Blade came already well sharpened. Tightening is OK, but could be more user-friendly. My one complaint is that both the knob and the handle are undersized (and made of some synthetic material instead of wood, but that goes with the incredibly low price). I have smallish hands, but with the narrow profile of the handle, pushing the plane soon becomes uncomfortable -- I put a glove on my right hand to help distribute the pressure -- and with the small and somewhat low-lying knob, grasping it securely is uncomfortable. (I plan on replacing the knob.) Overall, a very high performance-to-price ratio and strongly recommended to any weekend woodworking warrior: it's not a Veritas, but then it's not $200+ either.

Comfortable to hold and easy to use.
We had a very old small planer that was hard to use. This new one is sturdy and works so well. It is a convenient size and is comfortable to hold with the grip ball and handle. Have used it a lot already on our DIY project of finishing out the inside of our barndominium. It is comfortable to use and works well shaving studs level, whether taking off a little bit or even up to 1/2" in one spot. The adjustment wheels are a little sloppy loose and it was a bit difficult to get the blade adjusted at first but once set up it works great! UPDATE: Though I am still very pleased with this planer, I wanted to update my review to let you know that currently the replacement blade for this item is not available on Amazon, which is very surprising to me for an Amazon Basics product (https://www.amazon.com/Stanley-1-12-134-Replacement-Cutter-12-404/dp/B07MFBVZJ6).

Amazing Plane For The Price
My first impression with this Amazon Basics No.4 Adjustable Universal Bench Hand Plane was - Wow! It came packaged in form fitted high density foam, wrapped in plastic and coated with oil to prevent rust. All in a very sturdy cardboard box! The plane has good weight and the bottom was smooth and flat. This was the easiest plane to adjust. After loosening the thump screw that locks the blade, two thumb screws on each side at the top of the blade adjusts the blade depth and angle. Very simple and easy to use! The blade was very sharp out of the box and shaved through wood like a hot knife through butter. I was able to get this for under 18$ and let me tell you, it is every bit as good as planes costing triple or quadruple that price. This plane will definitely be a great addition to my shop and get a lot of use. For the quality and price, I highly recommend it!

Solid construction but not quite ready.
Overall, this Amazon Basics No. 4 bench plane is well constructed and feels solid in your hand. The cast iron body is thick and nicely designed. There was no rust anywhere and the tool wasn't packed in cramolin. The three main issues I had with mine are, the sole is not anywhere near flat, the mouth or opening for the blade is too wide, and the sharpness of the blade out of the box was mediocre. I can sharpen the blade and flatten the sole, but I'll have to live with the too wide mouth. All of this can be forgiven given the price of this tool and it's intended usage (not fine carpentry). I bought this as something I can throw in my tool bag/box for onsite jobs and not have to worry about it.

Keep buying from Amazon
Great planer for doors. My Dad used them like 100 yrs ago. Nice that Amazon had such a product available at this time and age Yr 2025. Keep up the good work Amazon. Local sores don't have what you have available to buy. CG

Finicky - not beginner friendly
Do not trust the blade out of the box. Mine has a dip in the middle meaning it takes more depth on the edges of the pass Good tool for someone familiar with planes. The dept adjustment is just bad. I like the idea of using the nuts to do depth. However they needed to use something like a nylon nut. Too much slack in the system to be of any meaningful use
