Q: Is it dishwasher safe?

DO NOT put sand toys in the dishwasher. The sand will kill your dishwasher pump. Just wash them in the sink with a little chlorine bleach.

No it doesn't but it is the perfect size for a toddler

Q: How durable are these compared to Melissa and Doug products?

I dont know about the Melissa and Doug product you mentioned but this set is vey durable and well made. The plastic is thick and stong. I couldn't imagine my son would be able to break any of the 4 pieces. Im very impressed with the quality.
