Model Engineering: A Guide to Model Workshop Practice

should have been split into 3 books
I bought this book thinking it would help me with understanding IC motors... not yet.Pros:Basically the material in the book is great - covers a LOT of ground, and the writer has a depth of knowledge and practicality which is excellent. It's refreshing to read an author who's not admonishing me to buy every obscure tool, and have a myriad of tools I'll only use once.Cons:The photographs in the book are so dark and contrasted they appear as if photocopied - the diagrams are fine, but the photographs have suffered badly (thankfully there aren't too many photos - lots of drawing though). Also there is so much material being covered in this book that it's hard to really delve into the detail on any one subject to the true depth of understanding the author displays. I honestly feel this book would have been a lot more readable if it were split into 3-4 books, and each book given the level of treatise the author was capable of giving it.Summary:I guess this isn't beginner material (for that use Workshop Practise books), but the material would be intermediate - it could include advanced material if more depth was included. I wouldn't start with this book, but I'd far from consider it a waste of time or money.

Great book
This book is a reprint from the 1915 original. It may seem outdated for the modern reader, nevertheless it has a lot of information in almost every subject regarding small steam engines both stationary and locomotives. This is a must for the model engineer.

Interesting reading, useful for a beginner and with some ideas for more advanced projects. The basics apply even in the computer age.

Copy not Reprint
this book is a copy and not a reprint. That is important to know because this book is from an early time when photos were always in black and white and a reprint gives you the detail in the photo whereas a copy turns a lot of the photos to very dark and makes it impossible to see the detail, this book has a lot of photos but most are just a black mess, cannot recommend this copy even though the book has a lot of information

A disappoinment - great potentail marred by reproduction methods.
This publication ought to have been a great read and it would have been had it been re-type set and high quality illustrations and reproduction images used. Instead this book is one of a burgeoning number of American imports whose readability is impaired by being photographically reproduced and losing definition and crispness of font in the process. For those willing to persevere with the reading of the book it contains lots of insights how the great Henry Greenly operarated when creating team engines and locomotives. The illustrations are marred by unintelligible dimensions and labels. The poor reading experience had seen the book adorn the shelves of a local charity shop within a fortnight of my purchase of it. I couldn't bring myself to bin it as I'm sure that I will give someone pleasure.
