Startlingly good as opera glasses for theater shows
I'm surprised by how well these work as theater glasses/opera glasses. I can't afford good seats, but I can afford these binoculars, and they make me feel much better about sitting in the nosebleed section.8x is probably the right magnification for a guy in the cheap seats who wants to see the faces of the actors or the fingers of the musicians. I have a no-name brand of 10x25 binoculars, but they are a bit too "jittery" for me to use in dark conditions. I think the more powerful the binoculars are, the harder it is to hold them steady. These 8x Pentax binoculars are rock-steady. I'm delighted with them.I've owned both kinds of binoculars: the straight-through tubes with roof prisms and the ones that bend or "kink" with porro-prisms. I'm utterly convinced that the bent binoculars like these are the way to go. They might look a little goofy, but they are easy to hold and they are so, so sharp and clear.Like most decent binoculars, this one has a main focus wheel, plus one of the eye pieces has a fine-tuning focus ability in case your eyes have different focal habits. My eyes apparently are well matched, because I don't need to use this little wheel. The focusing is completely smooth and silent. It's not hard to turn, it's not easy to turn, it's just right. The clarity is good. Really good. The image is bright in the center, and it stays bright and sharp even off to the sides of the viewable "circles." Colors seemed crisp with no shimmering or dullness. I found myself able to read notes the stage hands had written on masking tape, and I was sitting on the first balcony of a medium-sized theater in San Francisco. These feel great in my hand. Just about everything is covered in rubber or rubberized plastic, with just enough texture to allow you to get a comfortable grip. With all that rubber, these binoculars seem able to handle some bumps and spills even if you forget the case. All of the dials and hinges are pleasantly firm. Nothing sticks, nothing is annoying, but you have to be intentional about focusing the binoculars or bending them to fit how wide or far apart your eyeballs are. You can let the binoculars hang from the neck strap while you hike through the woods or scoot past fifty concert-goers, and those little bumps and nudges aren't going to knock your binoculars out of focus. They come with a big fold-out sheet of paper which has directions in maybe ten languages, but come on: these are binoculars. The big wheel does the main focusing and the little eyepiece wheel lets you make adjustments if one eye is sharper than the other. Don't look at the sun. Use the little bead to shorten or loosen the neck strap. There, I just told you how to use binoculars. The rear eyepieces come with black rubber caps, which I am /very/ worried I will lose. I wish there were a way to attach the eye caps to the neck strap or maybe in a separate pouch on the binocular case. Or I wish Pentax would just do us a favor and include a second pair. I haven't lost mine, but I'm sure I will. There aren't any front caps for the big front lenses, but I don't think they're needed anyhow. The main lenses in the front are sort of "recessed" inside big rubber "caves" so the glass is safely away from where your fingers, zippers, or jewelry might touch or scrape the lenses. The pictures show this pretty well; these binoculars have deep-set eye sockets. These aren't the huge and powerful binoculars you'd need to be captain of a battleship, but they are exactly what you need to bring to your next concert, basketball game, or high school musical. They work great, they feel great, they look a little weird. I didn't think I'd write this much, but I guess I'm delighted with them.

Very pleased with binoculars. Great investment.
Bought these for a theater play (rear orchestra seats), and they were perfect. Though pricier than other binocs, these were so worth it. Binocs are light but have heft (quality materials) and very comfortable in hands (for adults AND kids). Lenses are high quality--very sharp, clear and full line of vision. Also comes with case, lens caps. Pay extra and you'll be glad. We also shelled out $25 for cheaper binocs which were below-average--we'll be returning them.
