I was initially referred here by a Dirty Civilian YouTube video, where I saw this protractor being used. This video included a couple of tricks that I've found useful: 1) pull one strand from a piece of 550 Paracord and thread it through this protractor, tying a knot in each end to keep it in place. Just pull it taught and align it with the angle you want on the protractor to project an angle all the way across a larger map. 2) the little "rite in the rain" 3x5 notepad works well for land nav notes, and is the perfect size to store the MapTools pocket protractor while keeping it safe and flat, by folding a page to make a little pocket as pictured. Not only is this tool perfect for my needs, but the vendor included several instructional and practice sheets AND a *customized* declination sheet printed on waterproof paper that shows the declination for the specific zip code in my shipping address. None of this was even mentioned in the listing, and as low as this tool was priced, was completely unexpected. Thank you!

This company produces simple and effective protractors. I ordered my first protractor a couple of years ago. I decided on a pocket protractor with the same team. Not only does the pocket protractor work, I'm duly impressed with the extras they included with the package. Get a postcard to learn a bit about them, but they added some tools for learning navigation - useful for a novice like myself. See pic: (lanyard separate, also on Amazon). Give this business a try. They got better over the years and that's great considering the 2025 economy.

First, these tools are necessary if you want the precision of 8-digit grid coordinates. Though you may plan in the comfort of home, actual land navigation means on the move, outdoors. The protractor / scale you use has to live up to the challenge. It must be durable, yet compact. This tool achieves it all. It's tough, pocket-sized and comes with a pre-punched lanyard hole so you don't lose it. Here is a BIG plus: this seller, maptools.com, excels. Plainly, the owner John Carnes is passionate about land navigation. Maptools.com could just ship the tool and be done with it: most of us ordering these things know what they're for and how to use them. But, instead, John ships it with two bonuses: a grid coordinate miniature instruction course, and your personalized local declination printed on waterproof tough paper, giving not only your zip code's declination, but also explaining how to use declination. I saw a review criticism that the cut scale "pockets" were not outlined in red: I assumed these red highlights were for illustration only and did not expect my tool to arrive colored in that way. Another reviewer wrote that these are hard to read. We are talking pretty small numbers and lines here, so, yes, I would recommend a magnifying glass or reading glasses. I don't know how you would make these tools "large print" for easy reading. I did not want to pay this much for a grid square tool, but found that it was worth it.

If you don’t buy this for land nav you’re missing out. Plotted my points faster than everyone else and the numbers didn’t wash off from the weather/sweat like the standard issued

Product is sturdy and compact, perfect for field use. It also came with a large amount of free reference materials (some on waterproof paper) which will absolutely help someone who is new to land navigation. Thank you for being such a passionate seller!
