Practice Makes Perfect Basic English, Second Edition: (Beginner) 53 leasons +125 Exercises + 40 Audio Pronunciation Exercises

I did a lot of research on beginning ESL books, and this one is by far the best. The learning is incremental. Not too fast, and not too slow. It's challenging enough for good students, but has built in elements to help those who struggle. The app is priceless. I love the way it has the student look up all vocabulary in a given lesson FIRST, then they have it as a reference as they work through the lesson. This allows them to build their own working bilingual dictionary.

If you are trying to learn English, start with this book! It provides an excellent foundation for learning, goes through each part of speech and how to use it in sentence structure and has sufficient vocabulary for learning. You can't go wrong with this book series.

Best value for the money! I use it with all my students at this level. I wouldn't use it from a zero level, (I teach native Spanish speakers, so I use Ingles para todos for them to begin from zero) but this is an excellent book for those who know a little bit of English already. This is a "one-level" resource. I highly recommend.

Got as a companion to the "Advanced" volume. I just wanted lots of examples. I read and write at a very high level but didn't know the rules. I enjoy learning the nuts and bolts. This would be great for anyone that either never learned the rules, speaks/writes at a basic level and wants to improve or is ESL.

I am currently using this with high-beginners and they say it's helping them learn. It does take independent time to have the students look up words in their own language before trying the exercises. For independent study, some lessons are difficult for students to understand on their own without assistance. It works great for a class environment or tutoring one-on-one. Students do need to prepare in advance by looking up the words on the translation list for each lesson.

The book is great however the flashcard app and the 90 minute audio was not included with the book, still waiting on Mcgraw Hill to talk to the editor about this two missing items since Amazon does not have them.

My husband is learning English and I got this as a way to boost his knowledge (he's learned through various online programs and apps, but no formal classes). It's been great! He's skilled enough to understand the directions, so I'm not sure how easy it would be for someone with no knowledge of the language. I've been using the French Practice Makes Perfect books and have made great progress with those.
