Comprehensive
Overall, an excellent reference. The authors have presented a wide selection of theoretical approaches to important issues and empirical studies. It is a little heavy going in places but that reflects my lesser interest in some issues. Each chapter generally includes discussion of the relevant issues from several theoretical perspectives and some major studies. In addition to discussion of the published studies, it also uses British offical statistics and institutional history to provide context where relevant. The statistics are fine, but some of the institutional descriptions (eg how the education system works) may be difficult for international readers.I found the variety of viewpoints to be particularly valuable. Where a particular viewpoint has been substantially criticised, the authors report a criticism of that viewpoint rather than imposing their own voice and interpretation. I personally found this restraint frustrating to some extent as I felt some perspectives were clearly weaker than others, but it does contribute to the book's balance. The text has an encyclopedic feel, of a collection of not clearly related elements, rather than a sustained argument. This is consistent with the purpose of the book, but I would have preferred some comparison, perhaps using longer end of chapter summaries.

Good Book
The only reason I gave this a 3 is because the packaging was very flimsy and the book came with a torn cover. Otherwise I have no problem. However, they should change the packaging whenever they are shipping books.
