In many ways, the heart of Canada lies in the province of Ontario. Ontario is second in size only to Quebec and over a third of the population of Canada lives in Ontario. The province has the nickname Workshop of the Nation because Ontario leads the nation in manufacturing. Busy mills, factories and plants are concentrated in the Golden Horseshoe, which curves in a crest from Toronto near Lake Erie around the Great Lakes to the Thunder Bay area of Lake Michigan. Agriculture is also important to this Great Lakes Province. The herds of dairy and beef cattle grazing in the rich pastures between Lake Huron and Lake Ontario, tobacco fields flourishing along Lake Erie and fruit orchards thriving inthe famous Niagara fruit belt, all contribute to Ontario's position as the nation's largest producer of farm products. Ontario ranks second only to Alberta in mining, and the mines of Sudbury near Lake Superior yield one fourth of the world's supply of nickel. Toronto is a chief Canadian shipping center on the Great Lakes, as well as the administrative center and capital of the province and the nation. Ontario's Coat of Arms manifests the province's spirit of being at the forefront of modern Canada -- the three maple leaves in the center of the shield symbolize Canada, while the bear above stands for strength. The moose and Canadian Deer both represent the abundant wildlife of the province, and the red and white Cross of St. George stands for the province's ties to Great Britain.
