Awful
This model admittedly from 1971 has so many faults it is hard to know where to start and I have contacted Airfix about their quality as this should never have left the factory. It is such a shame as when it is complete and painted in its splendor it is beautiful. Unfortunately, I have to give it one star, the hull was warped, the decks were bent the masts were bent and the loom for making the shrouds and ratlines has a glaring design fault.

Lovely model
Bought as a present. A lesser known battleship which my husband thoroughly enjoyed making and researching. Looked great upon completion.

You get out what you put in.
Having actually seen the "Vasa" (Swedish spelling) in it's museum, (Well worth the visit if you are in Stockholm) and not finding one in the gift shop? I was pleased to find this Airfix "Vintage Classic" kit. It clearly states on the box, "Mold tools made in 1971", so anyone who has made an Airfix ship kit from this era will know what to expect. However unlike the HMS Victory kit I built in the early 70's, you will have to make up the rigging ropes yourself. But a frame is provided for doing this, so patience will be required. All the parts in the kit are well formed, and comprehensive plans are included. This kit is going into my "retirement stash" so I have not built it yet, but I'm looking forward to the build.

Airfix re-released their 1971 model of the Vasa, the ill-fated Swedish Flagship that capsized on her maiden excursion in 1628. The King of Sweden had ordered that the ship be enlarged after the keel had already been laid, so the builders simply added length to the ship without widening the ribs to give it stability against capsizing. The long and narrow ship was more akin to a canoe than a regular boat. Being a ship of state, it was lavished with decorations and bronze cannons. The ship was dangerously top-heavy and unstable. After a very elaborate launching ceremony in front of the King and all of Stockholm, the ship sailed less than a mile before a gust of wind made it heel to one side and then capsize to the horror of all those watching from shore. It truly was a national disaster for Sweden. The wreck laid on the bottom of the harbor for over 300 years and in the 1950's, was raised and brought back to shore where it was hauled to a special museum to display and restore the beautiful old ship. A true must-see for visitors to Stockholm. The Airfix model is beautifully molded with great detail. The parts have a minimum of flash and seam lines. It is nicely sized for the modeler to assemble and to display. The rigging is a bit over-simplified, and for hard-core ship model builders, it is well worth the time to add additional lines to add authenticity. It's a great kit for the money.
