Classic Design with a surprising IMPROVEMENT
I bought the original design of this tool decades ago when it first came out. Great tool, with one flaw back then. It did not hold up well cutting steel wire. Well that was 30+ years ago. I bought a new one, and was just suprised and delighted to see Gerber made a great classic BETTER. Carbide cutting inserts, for cutting steel wire ! ( like fencing wire, coat hangars etc ) On top of that, the carbide inserts are 3 sided, so if worn, just loosed with included tool, and rotate the insert to a fresh blade.I am a retired Master Mechanic, now in Landscaping. I have wanted another blunt pliar Gerber for 20-something years, and voila ! Gerber EXCEEDED expectations !I seldom rave in Reviews unless excellence is found. Here you go !If you need a handy belt multi tool, buy the BEST, get a Gerber !Buy This Tool ! Great tool, built to give service for a lifetime. ( Ladies: buy your man this ! )

Expensive as heck but worth it
Bought these Gerbers to replace the many years old ones I lost. They are pretty much industructably rugged, well built and functional. They also have a few new minor features that wern't in my precious ones.

I am so glad that I bought this - Utility to spare
I bought this over another Gerber model that has scissors (which I wanted) because this one had thicker gripping jaws and I needed something that could actually fill in for a real set of pliers. This fit the bill. All the other accessories it has are just icing on the cake. I've used the knife quite a bit and the plier function. everything else I've checked to see the function of, and though I've not used everything (I never expect to use the can opener, but better to have and not need than....), all the tools seem sturdy and well made. All the locking functions work well (a very necessary safety feature) and I'm glad I can open it one-handed switchblade style (well sort of). The one thing I'd advise to anyone that buys this....oil it as soon as you get it and if you get salt on it (from say.... opening bags of ice-melt), wash it with just water to get the salt off, blow it dry with high-pressure air, and oil it again asap. I waited a few days and experienced surface rust on the accessories (not the body - just the accessories and fortunately no real rusting on the accessory knife edges). If I lost it I would buy another one right away.

I FEEL NAKED WITHOUT IT
I've been carrying one of these items for fifteen years. The original didn't have the carbide insert cutters, and I haven't yet had a need to use them. I ran a warehouse in the military, and having this item on my belt saved me an unbelievable amount of time. I've had several different combination tools, and I like this one better than any of the others. The serrated edge blade cuts cardboard without dulling, like a normal blade would. The pliers are rugged enough for most jobs, and the screwdrivers fit the bill for everything but the most delicate work. It is an all-around tool that I find indispensable for everyday life. I bought a new one, because my old sheath fell apart and a new sheath was over half the price of the whole setup. My old one is in my surveyor's tool belt, and I carry the new one at all other times. I have used it to make quick car repairs, open a variety of packaging, redo electrical wiring, take apart and put together appliances, cut steel banding, and even crack nuts. The only thing it cannot do is act as an allen wrench, so I keep a set of those in my vehicle. It also doesn't aid in picking up girls, unless, of course, their car is on the fritz

Workhorse
I had this one's grandfather on my belt for maybe fifteen years. It turned up missing (kids) so I got this one as a replacement. Just as useful if not a little more so because of the updated tool set. The cutters slip through a wire hanger like it's nothing and it makes a fairly blunt cut. File has course and fine sides that do a great job on burrs and bevels. Standard and serrated edges are good. Standard knife edge hones to fine, (not razor) sharp. The new locking system is a VERY good idea. I manged to nick myself a few times with my old one.My favorite feature of this is the "flick to open." Actually, I don't do it that way at all and I advize against it, because on a few occasions, I have let the thing fly and one of those put a pretty good dent in my bike's tank. I've found that you can one-hand it just by holding it upright and squeezing the slider buttons betwixt thumb and forefinger. The Multi Plier is a little stiff at first and needs some machine oil and a little use to loosen up, but once it's there, it will drop down with just a pinch. The finish is outstanding and maybe improved over the previous generation. It cleans up well even after hard use on plumbing and automotive workMissing star is probably just nostalgia for the previous model. The plastic grip on the lock release just really bugs me. I'm sure it's sturdy and all, I just have this overwhelming desire for the whole thing to look like it was made from the same metal.

An improved classic!
This is my 3rd or 4th multitool. I had 2 Gerber, a Lethearman and another I can't remember the brand... Gerber is by far the best of them all. Especially this model with the blunt nose which is MUCH better than the "needle nose", more robust, and also has the one-hand opening system which is SUPER useful. It comes with a very simple, but VERY practical case, with the GERBER logo embroidered on it.
