How durable is this dome? Is it a solid plastic, or will it tear or crack easily?

My experience with this dome, it works very well for me have used it for 2 seasons . Not a hard plastic but a some what flexable plastic , if you push on it with a finger it will give a bit but retains it's shape . I could see if a person was too rough with it , it could damage the dome , with my dome I haven't had any durability issues .

is this for only 1 hood?

The vent closure parts were missing and I only got 1 hood. Would have never bought this item unless it included 2 hoods .

Can you put a heat lamp on it, or will it melt or ruin it?

i use high output t5 lamps/ the wont melt the lid even close to it. over time though they do turn the dome brown if too close. i just had mine die on me after about 5-7 seasons. it had also started cracking around the base.
