does this mic need powering with an inline pre amp type thing, if anybody could link me one would be much apppreciated as they sound terrible

Unfortunately if you pay £8 for two the quality is going to be poor, I bought them to use the frames, removing the mics supplied and replacing with Trantec mics which cost around £80 each. However that's much cheaper than the manufactured head mics which can cost in excess of £180 each.

Plugging this into my audio interface with gain on maximum and I can still hear nothing at all? What's going on?

Use mine with a a belt pack and wireless receiver they worked fine. Maybe the jack needs an adapter or check your channel switches and see if the input plug is active in your system. Other than that talk to the people that made it?
