The anime is probably the better experience, but if you like the anime and want to experience the original work, you simply can't go wrong. There's details in the Light novel that just couldn't make it into the anime do to the shortcomings of anime production and the limitations of condensing the material into episodal format. Review: If you enjoyed learning about what happened to Araragi during spring break, then you'll love Nekomongatari (Black) - Where to begin? This is a "prequel" story, that still manages to keep a firm tongue-in-cheek towards the more current going-ons of our favorite characters. Taking place before Araragi's first encounter with Senjougahara, and finally detailing just what exactly went on during "Golden Week." How the heck are you supposed to fight a teenaged cat-girl running about in her underwear? Usually, I'd recommend snuggling, but this cat comes with a wicked bite. Combined with Hanekawa, and you've got a purrfectly new meowberration, and quite possibly the scariest thing Araragi has ever faced!

I love this series
What else is there to say? I love this series. Each chapter is just the main character having a conversation as the mystery unravels by the end. It's fun, Japanese, and thought-provoking. I've read every book so far and can't get enough.

Neko and panty-tastic
Most of the critical circumstances of this book are already explained and alluded to in Bakemonogatari part 3. But still an enjoyable ride and a nice fill between Kazumonogatari and Bakemonogatari part 1.

Another great addition to the series and I'm just going to say, Hanekawa is a character worthy of her own storyline.

3.5 stars, if I'm being honest.
Nekomonogatari Kuro has a lot working against it on it's own. The second prequel to Nisioisin's massively popular Bakemonogatari series, I have to say this is my least favorite entry in the franchise. While it isn't bad by any means, it definitely had a lot of hit and miss sections, moreso than other books. Neko Kuro takes place during Golden Week, a period from the end of April to the beginning of April with one Japanese holiday after another. During this time Koyomi Araragi learns the truth about the abuse his classmate, Tsubasa Hanekawa, suffers at home. Shortly thereafter, Hanekawa is possessed by a Cat apparition, and begins to go on a rampage. It's up to Araragi and Oshino put a stop to the Hanekawa before she does lasting damage to someone. There are two basic problems with this series. First, as has already been discussed, this series is a prequel. Sure, Kizu was a prequel as well, but the events of that series were shrouded in mystery, and had a bunch of new characters. The Tsubasa cat arc from Bake already gives you the gist of this plot of this novel, and there aren't any new characters, so there isn't really any suspense or much mystery to this. Second, much like Tsukihi Phoenix before it, Nisio let the comedy portions at the beginning run for too long before the action really got started. The anime managed to fit over 100 pages of this into a single episode without losing anything of particular importance. That being said, it's not like there isn't plenty to love here. The aforementioned comedy included some of my favorite jokes in the entire series, and the confrontations between Araragi and Hanekawa are fantastic. Now that we've got all the backstory out of the way, it's time to start 2nd season, the best set of stories in the franchise. Join me in January!

Love Monogatari. Love Hanekawa. Love Neko.
Neko is my third or fourth favorite arc in the series. i really enjoy the alone time with araragi and hanekawa, it helps form them alot as characters for me and makes the last arc in bake it home for me.

Was a very tearjerking read, but great nonetheless
