For the price very good, reliable item
UPDATE Nov. 18, 2016: I ordered another two-pack of these based on liking the two I already have so much, and wanting these in a couple other rooms or perhaps for travel. They're handy when you need a flashlight for something, and reliable when our power goes out typically a couple times a year during storms. In fact I'm raising my review to 5 stars, for the price vs. value received these are outstanding. I hadn't realized it was 4 YEARS since my original purchase and those two units still function well. I see the old ones are slightly less bright than the new ones when I compare the beam side-by-side. One minor difference in the new ones: there is no silver reflector behind the front 3 LEDs. It's just a white "reflector" same color as the rest of the device. This casts a softer more diffused light when I compare on a white ceiling, but it's a minimal difference. There is still a silver reflector behind the 2 front LEDs.The new lights arrived fully charged as with the two I'd purchased in 2012.Original review:These units are less expensive than a couple of the competing emergency lights, one reason I purchased 2 of them. I received (on 8/7/12) model #71134 (without "CC" at the end, which is what was advertised here and that other reviewers mention). I don't know what the difference is with the "CC", but mine do seem to work well and have good illumination (there are only 2 or 3 LEDs, keep in mind) in the dark. Both had a charge when I received them. Both come on at power failure (tested in a power strip) with either the front light or the flashlight function as selected. There is no "night light" except a red LED (on all the time when plugged in) which would be an aid in finding the device in the dark but provides virtually no light on its own (the selected main light comes on of course if the power goes off or if you unplug the device).I opened one device up (4 Phillips screws) to check the battery type and there are 3 "AAA" batteries enclosed in a green plastic-wrapped pack (stamped "Ni-MH AAA 200mAh 3.6V"), which is soldered to the device circuit board (unfortunately.) So it will be possible to replace the batteries if needed, but it'll probably require some light soldering (or maybe my favorite, heaving taping!) of the wires to the battery pack. I hate throwing things like this away just because the batteries stop working. The good news is, they are labeled as Ni-MH, not Ni-Cad batteries, which should perform better. For the low price, this is a simple and effective emergency light that will help me find the door or the lanterns and other gear in an emergency or power outage.

An inexpensive and simple way to be prepared
All I need to say is that after I bought the first one, and had a Power failure, I ordered 12 more. I distributed around my house and gave as gifts to 3 senior citizen women who live alone.I got the idea for these from the light bulbs that come back on in a power failure. (As long as you had that particular light on when the power failed.). In my search, I came across this form of emergency lighting. I liked these much better. Plug in any outlet and forget. So I found 4 models that I thought would be good. Amerelle (this product), Energizer, GE (with night light) and Westek (with night light). I plugged them in with the idea that I would test them the next morning after 12 hours of recommended charging. (simply unplug). I woke up very early the next morning (still dark) and was just lying in bed when I heard a popping sound, ( transformer in the street) the heat went off and there was a strange light in my bedroom. It all happened so fast. It is a similar feeling you get when the lights go out and you are in the dark and trying to get your bearings. The big difference was I had light. Enough light to easily see everything in my room. I got up and quickly saw that all the emergency lighting was on. My first thought was that I had blown a fuse with the new emergency lighting (silly me) so I went to the panel and checked. (All good). A call to Con Ed confirmed a neighborhood outage. The power stayed off for 3 1/2 hours. I decided to leave them all on to see how long they would last. They all lasted until the power came back. They turned off as quickly as they turned on.Since all worked as advertised, I made my decision based on my needs for each room. For one without a night light I choose this product over the energizer model because it has; a low setting for extended light time (claimed 12 hrs), best claimed run time in normal setting (6 hours), much better design for light distribution and looks better. The energizer would be my choice if I wanted to also use it for a flash light. I already have good flash lights and lanterns for long term outages. Both have a constant bright red light to show power. If using in a bedroom, tape over it.For the ones with the night light, both worked as advertised. One advantage for the Westek is it has a low setting for extended light time. Only suggestion for the GE, the pictures show the light facing up and the sensor facing down. I found that by putting the sensor up, the night light goes off on cloudy days and the nightlight shines on the floor and not your eyes..It's rare that emergency equipment is used so soon after installation. Happy to say, work as advertised.PS. They would make excellent stocking stuffers.

Very Handy During a Blackout
These were well-priced for the amount you get. They arrived in good working condition, and appear as advertised. Great to be able to put these around the house and know you’ll never be left in the dark… especially areas like the kid’s bedrooms and bathrooms!

Lights when you need it
The power went out March 30 at about 10:30 p.m. and my emergency lights came on immediately. I was not in total darkness. The black-out did not last long, but it is comforting to be able to see in different areas of the house. I have 4 placed in different areas. As soon as the power comes back on the emergency lights go off. They are always charging as long as they are plugged in.

Do not buy if you are in the UK !
Searched for emergency lights. Liked the look of these. They arrived today. They have US standard plug sockets and internals for 120v. Amazon UK should NOT be selling electrical products designed for the US market to UK buyers. I have now to do a 45 mile round trip to drop off return to my nearest UPS pick up point. The product may be great if you're in the US. Here in the UK it's of no use hence my review of the seller/Amazon rather than the product. ( there was no option to review the seller ? )
