The Model Railroader's Guide to Grain (Guide to Industries) Paperback – February 1, 2015

Very informative information on the grain industry and railroading. Great read!

This is a really good reference book on the grain industry and the railroad's transportation practices. The book has very good pictures for modeling ideas.

Informative, what i was looking for my HO layout.

OK, I would give this a 4.5 if I could, but not a 5. I have a lot of the Model Railroader books, and this one goes in to a lot of detail on the grain and related rail operations. I loved this book to the point that I am changing my 1970's layout plans to incorporate more grain operations (I would put this in my top 3 books from Kalmbach).So why not 5 stars?-Maps of grain growing areas are modern (2012) only(yes, that is a nitpick)-There is some repetition in the text, especially around car grades/quality-There is not a single 'scale model' concept example of any of the industries represented in the book.-There is no reference to scale, maunfacuters, or anything else model related (not sure if this is a bad thing)Does any of that criticism wreck this book? No. Basically the book talks about the real world industry and leaves almost all of the model planning to the reader, so I find the term 'guide' slightly off. Maybe my nitpicks are because I also have Kalmbach's Industries Along The Rails books (also very good (same author)), if brief Volume 1 covers grain for a whole 14 pages and uses many of the same photos).In short, you could spend a lot of time trying to piece this all together from other books or the internet, or you could spend a few bucks and get a nice solid reference point for grain operations in 20th century railroads.

Beautifully done and highly useful!!!! Probably one of the best of Jeff Wilson many fine and useful model railroader's handbooks.
