Very Good r&b Comedy music disc
As the first review in the catalog goes into such detail, I will only say I bought this for the song "Well (Baby Please Don't Go)" which I had been looking for a long time. Covers of this song credit this to Walter Ward, which is how I figured out that The Olympics did the original version. But this release credits nearly every song to Smith & Goldsmith, which was probably a disservice to Walter Ward, who does not get the credit he deserves. Often I can't quite catch the lyrics, the sound seems murky to me, such as "Western Movies." Other songs, especially late in the disc seem to be of poor quality. Yet overall I would rate this very good. Quite enjoyable. I am disappointed that it does not include their Tri-Disc recordings, as I have two of them on an anthology of soul music. Yet it is a good to excellent sampling of a significant musical group that should have more famous.

Great stuff to play stoned! Thats the way I first heard them in 1968 and I've loved them ever since. Terrific track selection and fantastic sound! Buy this CD!

western movies review
This cd was good although I expected more songs of the group as the marathons. The selection of the songs were ok and quality was excellent.

OLYMPICS
ENJOYED WESTERN MOVIES A LOT -- OTHER CUTS WERE DISAPPOINTING. I WAS ONLY VAGUELY FAMILIAR WITH THIS GROUP FROM THE FIFTIES. LIVE AND LEARN.

Special album
There's a certain kind of breathlessness that comes when listening to old recordings such as this. The blurb talks about A and B sides, which has to mean that there have been 16 singles taken from between the years 1958-1961, put together as A's and B's to make the 32 track listing. It's clever. The 50s and early 60s was an exciting time for music. The 1950s brought us into the Rock N Roll theme, which was further expanded and experimented with in the following decade, and indeed, ever since. Funnily enough, you'll find Western Movies included on many R&R compilations; however, listening to it with any degree of experience with this music will make you remember stuff from what's known as the Deep South: a place in the States that old radio jocks love talking about on specialised programmes before they play recordings such as are listed on this album!. This is where most old soul comes from that we all love, assuming we're old enough! You'll hear a lot of Doo-Wop style performance; some really old Soul and it'll give you goosebumps! Some of this stuff does have to be properly appreciated. You must have a definite liking for very old soul to fully enjoy an album like this.Imagine hearing The Mambo Beat for the very first time, for instance. You'll soon realise that the lyrics have absolutely nothing to do with the title! The beat does, though. This album is truly a lesson in music experience. I'm pretty sure a lot of it would be an acquired taste. Those of us who were brought up on very old vinyl recordings will know a special pleasure upon hearing this lovely collection. It is a beautiful album. In fact, the music is more of a surprise than even I imagined. I'd never before heard anything other than Western Movies before. Didn't even know who did it. Was desperately looking for the song a few months ago, found this album and decided to buy it. That was not a mistake. I love the obscure. Getting to know records becomes a special pleasure with an album like this.
