Q: Can you add the l3 without draining the l2 out?

Damfino! I guess it would depend on whether draining the L2 involved removing the gear case and splitting it or just draining the case with a drain screw. I've had mine for a couple years now and haven't had to either add or drain the oil. I would say that if you have to add gear oil there's a leak somewhere and adding L3 without draining wouldn't be a big deal. OTOH, if you're committing long-term ownership preservation/maintenance you should drain the old gear case oil and use the new L3. Otherwise they should be backwards compatible. You can always send an email to Ariens as well.

Q: Is 1 bottle enough? I have an Ariens compact 24 model 920014.

It depends how often you use your snow blower, but 1 bottle should last several seasons. You only need to use a few drops to lubricate the gears.

Q: Will this work in a ariens 824LE that has the L-2 lube in the gear box now

Karen I would advise using lubricant here as stated in the manual for this machine as it is very important part of the machine to care for as per manual. "Use only Ariens special gear lubricant L-2 (Part Number 00008000)." Note "you DO NOT completely fill this gear case".
