excellent book!
excellent book, lots of great commands to get you used to the command line. Only downfall is Amazon is not packaging their books well anymore, I ordered $100 worth of books that were all thrown in a box and arrived all banged up! This is the 2nd order in a row, I will think twice about ordering again as I dont care for my books being all banged up! They used to use a cellofane wrapper to hold them all together but guess it was a cost cutting measure, sad to see damaged books..

Not for the beginner
To be fair I haven't finished reading this book yet but after reading the first few chapters its pretty clear that this is indeed a book for people who have used command line on other Unix systems or have a solid understanding on how systems operate. Although there appears to be a tonne of wealth here about OS X Terminal commands, the author only briefly explains the 'why' and then dives straight into the 'how'. For a newbie like me I was looking for a manual that would de-mystify the multitude of Terminal commands and throw in clear explanations on when and why. Having said that this book is still really easy to read even though it is assumed you know what is being talked about.

The book meets my expectations and I am glad to have it!
The first copy I received was defective: about 100 pages in the center of the book were blank! However the seller promptly replaced the defective book with s good copy and thus I am happy with my purchase!

Useful desk reference!
Just like the first few pages of the book says, this is more of a reference for someone looking to solve a specific problem using the UNIX base of Mac OS. It's not something you're meant to read cover to cover. I have taken a browse through it and learned quite a few interesting things, despite being an intermediate OS X user at best.Highly recommended for medium proficiency and up users! Keep a copy next to your system.

Makes the Mac more useful
In the past I have used Unix, but being new to MAC I have had to relearn Unix. This book presents the commands in a logical order. It makes the MAC more useful.

Three Stars

Delightful little book!
The authors' exhortations aside, I did read this on vacation and it did entertain me. I have a few minor quibbles: (1) The file-system need not be case-insensitive. I have been running 10.4 and 10.5 on a case-sensitive file-system for years with only one application having problems (although I understand that some Adobe products fall over on case-insensitive filesystems). (2) Pine's successor is Alpine; its pico is now open source. (3) Tar can be made less GNUish by setting COPYFILE_DISABLE=true. (4) Backticks vs. $() -- I have used the former for decades but the book should really advocate the latter. (5) At least one typo "ssh -x ..." (should be "ssh -X ...") but overall quite blemish-free. (6) No mention of (x)emacs is shocking.I recommend buying this book. Some may find it daunting, others may find it elementary but all will benefit.

I am impressed with the detail in this book. It does require some basic knowledge of the command structure but even if you do not have that the reader might benefit from this (although I would not recommend it if you are utterly novice to an Apple Mac).Good buy with plenty of tips and commands

Learning toolbox.
I really enjoyed learning from this book. I think it's helped me learn a fair amount about Apple's terminal. The only reason I'm not giving it five stars is that the description stated that this book was intended for both novice to advanced users but I felt some parts were not explained enough for a novice and took a fair amount to really grasp, apart from the book. Other than that I would recommend to anyone to understand Mac's terminal.
